I'm finally free from Comcast. New to DTV and I am so happy with it. I have the Triple package through Verizon with upgraded service for less money. More for less always makes me happy.

Don't know why the switch took me so long, but I think it had something to do with those commercials a few years ago...some Jersey couple on their couch explaining why "I'm done with the dish". Propaganda can be so persuasive. I hate Comcast so much. Why cable still has a monopoly in this day is a mystery to me. I am trying to convince everyone I know to move to DTV, but not much luck. For some reason, the fear runs deep. It's not like its brain surgery, its just TV.

Anyway, this is one of the best forums I've read and just wanted to say hello.

What were some of the problems with Comcast, besides the rates? Im curious on why everyone hates Comcast besides the fact its a monopoly. (I do have E* myself)

Is lousy customer service and poor PQ a good start? I dropped them many, many years ago, and helped convert friends and family who also love being Comcast free.

Welcome!

Getting out of the service and living on my own, I wanted DIRECTV at first because it was hella-cool. I got my first taste of "home theater". I got sick of having to get my DIRECTV through Pegasus though and dumped them for Comcast. I was still a newbie at this stuff but I knew that fuzzy pictures and composite audio wasn't gonna cut it. I bit the bullet and went back to Pegasux only to be saved a few years later directly (no pun intended) by DIRECTV.

I left Comcast because of rates. I pay roughly 85 to D* and Comcast was charging me 115 for equivilent services. So 30 a month basically was a big deal to me. Plus I am a Sunday Ticket fan (could tell because of my avatar could you? ) I have clearwire broadband now with my D* service and I am totally wireless in terms of my incoming tranmission. Basically I went from 160 to 120 a month for all my services. Also Comcast had so many break ups in service here in Seattle that I was so frustrated I almost killed the Comcast DVR. Also the fact that they are a monopoly does hurt market economics. I can't wait till September when more glorious HD is coming on D*!

My brother uses Comcast near New Haven CT. He really wants to dump them. They are now charging a new fee for the NFL Channel. He liked watching the Shuttle launches in HD until they took that channel away. His cablecard freezes up.

His internet service was so poor that the browser would time out waiting for a connection and they had the unmitigated gall to raise the price for it to over forty dollars per month. I solved his internet problem with ATT DSL.

There are lots of dishes looking skyward around his neighborhood.

For most folks, cable is a "no brainer" in that you don't have to worry about getting your locals, in most areas you can still plug the coax cable into the back of a "cable-ready" TV and surf the standard cable package, and cable can offer the "triple play" packages.

In short, most folks don't want to think about it or research it, they just want programming there when they turn on their set. If DIRECTV and/or Dish Network can provide 100% local coverage and cable starts requiring a stb to receive all their programming, then maybe folks will start seeing it as a more level playing field.

For me the customer service was horrible and the price way to high.

1. Customer service is just terrible. For example, after I canceled and returned the box and settled the account in person, I still got a bill for 6 weeks unpaid. I then had to sit on the phone for 15 minutes only for them to tell me to disreagard the bill and that they owed me a credit of 78 cents.

2. Cost is not market value. I was paying $80/month for cable with regular digital service, no DVR, no HD, no HBO. DTV is more affordable, even without the rebates.

3. Their equipment is terrible. When Comcast was installed the guy had to try 5 different boxes before he found one that worked. My parents have this box that was different from mine for some reason, that has the most non-sensical on screen menu.

4. The cable internet was also terrible. I switched to DSL a while ago. I can't even get people to switch to DSL. They all think that just because it comes through the phone line that it is as slow as dial up.

5. Cable telephone? Whatever.

DTV has my locals so I didn't think about that and I could see that being an issue with some. There is also this fear of technology. Outerspace radio and TV is something of Ray Bradbury. To be honest, I only considered DTV because someone gave me a subscription to Sirius for Christmas. After I realized I was living in a fog did I begin to think that there were better options than cable.
