If you came from the DTivo or Tivo world, this remote will work the best for you. The layout and design is similar to the penut.

Highly recommend.

Man, I had this in my hand this weekend and Best Buy and couldn't pull the trigger at $149.

At $49, I am happy to click away! Thanks for sharing this!

Is it certain that this operates an R15 or HR20 DVR?

Oh my, if you have been thinking about getting a Harmony remote, GRAB ONE OF THESE QUICKLY!!! Great price. I just ordered one myself for our upstairs entertainment center. Almost wish I hadn't see this thread. Another $50 I'm going to have to explain to my wife. :)

I got it in 30 seconds w/Amazon's 1-click ordering and super-saver free ship.

Thanks for the heads-up, Albert!

David

Yes, it wil operate almost anything.

You will go online, enter your equipment by mfgr (STB, TV, AVR, DVD, etc) and model, do a simple set up of "activities" that the software will guide you through, using only those devices necessary for each activity, and download the codes into your remote. It is quite an elegant solution. I have owned a few of these, from simple to more complex.

One button to turn everything on/off for each activity "TV" "Movie" (DVD), "Music" etc. Go to the Logitech website for more info:

Even if that does happen, $50 is still a steal and a nice "test drive" for a better Harmony remote later on.

I agree, you can only drop a remote on the ground so many times before it gives up the ghost. Besides, at this price, I'd buy two (okay, so I did buy two). We have a pair of harmony remotes in the living room (which is great - one normally stays lost, but we have a better chance of finding one of the two if they get lost.)

We've had several universals and the 676 is by far our favorite. As luck would have it, our 2 year old tossed ours across the living room last week and cracked the screen on the hardwood floors. Perfect timing for a replacement.

Oh, and for an extra $9.99 you can get the 2 year extended warranty. With a 2 and a 4 year old running around the house, I went for the warranty even though I rarely do. $60 is still a great deal and if it breaks (again), I'll just get a new one.

Boy you got that right but the way everyone is talking about it I figured what the hell the wife will only yell for about 30 seconds and nothing like when she saw my new tv I bought a year ago. I thought she was going to kill me because of the size of it which is only 58 inches but if looks could kill I would have been dead but she got over it. LOL

Basically $30...Seriously though from reading descriptions of both it appears that the 670 is a newer model but other than that from reading I could not find that much of a difference between the 2. Also it appears that neither the 670 nor the 676 have the colored buttons for interactive purposes. (You'll have to program them in.)

They typically have a new deal every day. A new deal comes up at midnight central time every day. The item is for sale for that day only until it sells out or it hits midnight.

Unless they are having a "Woot Off" which is another deal entirely...

Thanks to the forum for posting that little gem.

One question though, why is Amazon so incredibly slow to ship stuff? I ordered yesterday and they estimate the ship date will be July 31, that's 8 days! They estimate delivery between August 6 - 10. I won't get it for over two weeks!

Is this punishment for using Super Saver shipping? I ordered some gifts from them July 17, and most still have not shipped. Some of them shipped just yesterday, July 23, and are estimated to arrive August 2!!! That's ten days after actually being picked up by UPS! (Amazon gave UPS notice to pick up on July 19, four days before they actually picked up)

It didn't use to be this bad, has something happened at Amazon?

Is this punishment for using Super Saver shipping?

That's pretty much it. Amazon's site says Super saver is 6-10 business days (or up to two weeks from the day it leaves the warehouse). Regular shipping, which was about $6 for the remote, is about 3-5 business days.

Super Saver might be free, but it might also take an extra week. I have given up on that and switched to Amazon prime.

On the other hand, some of us are lucky (read: smart) enough to have caught a second wife who doesn't object to our electro-toy hobby. She has said more than once: "Unlike with my first husband, at least now I know where the money goes and where you are every night".

Maybe if you had not thought of your wife as "a resident piece", things would have been different! Then again, we can't know how she thought of you!;)

BINGO that is just the way I operate and that is pretty much the way she operates as well for things she likes. I really can't complain she only whines for a few seconds but I think she will be happy that I am going to get rid of 4 remotes. She could care less about HDTV and many a time will be watching SD up in the bedroom because she won't take the time to learn how to use things.

I have to send mine back as it will not work with my tv or Bose system I was on the phone with tech support for over an hour last night.

This might help (not that I don't trust tech support). I found it over in the Logitech Forums:

1. Which remotes can control my devices?
All Harmony remotes utilize the same database of commands/devices. While some remotes are advertised as being DVR or TiVo friendly, the truth is that all Harmony remotes can control a DVR or TiVo. If your devices are in the database (which you can check by taking the test drive), there is a good chance that the Harmony and device will interact well together. You may be required to learn some/all of the commands if they are not in the database or do not function correctly. Furthermore, you may need to change some of the timing settings, etc...as well. There are a few exceptions to note. The Harmony remotes can not learn RF commands, so learning is limited to IR signals. Also, only the Harmony 890 (and not the 1000 - due to recent announcements) is capable of controlling Z-Wave RF devices. The Harmony 1000 can still be paired with the Wireless Extender to control IR devices that do not have line of sight to the remote.

10. Why isn't my Bose or DirecTV box responding to commands?
These devices are typically controlled by RF signals by default. It should be noted that they use proprietary RF signals. The Harmony remotes (including the Harmony 890), and no universal remote that I know of, are not capable of controlling devices that use proprietary RF signals. The Harmony 890 is capable of controlling Z-Wave RF devices directly with the remote as well as IR devices without line of sight via the Wireless Extender. Fortunately, many Bose and DirecTV boxes can be switched over to be controlled via IR instead of RF. Doing so should allow you to control them with your Harmony remote. Certain fans, like Hampton Bay, are also controlled via proprietary RF signals. Unfortunately, these typically do not have an IR mode that you can switch to.

I got the remote yesterday and set it up. So far so good. The Harmony internet setup procedure is pretty much standard and works great. Very versatile and re-programming individual buttons is very easy.

Couple of observations. Not all of the important HR20 buttons are automatically programmed into the remote. For instance, the skip forward button is there but the skip back is not. The list button is also not programmed so you have to go into the setup and assign it. You can get to any control via the LCD screen but that can be a little cumbersome.

You also will need to program the color buttons if you use those frequently. I programmed the red and green buttons to the "A" and "B" buttons on the remote so I can at least jump 12 hours forward and back while in the guide.

I can see now how the buttons on this remote can degrade quickly. You really have to treat them nicely.

Other than that, for a Harmony remove, it works well. Having interchangeable faceplates is kind of cool (It comes with an extra blue and red faceplate). Generally, for a remote like this, it's still a great deal for $50.

Glad you got yours working. I have to say though I thought the setup of this remote was not all that easy in some cases but I am glad I gave it a shot and think it is pretty cool how you connect to their site for updates. I will stick with the 4 remotes that I have as I am more than use to using them and actually once everything is turned on I only use the HR20 remote anyways

Sorry to hear that. I don't know about the HP TV, but I did rework my fathers remote to work with his Bose system by switching it to IR instead of RF, but I'm sure this isn't the case for all the systems. And it's a moot point if it doesn't work the TV - that's probably priority #1.

I do agree with you - I wouldn't be pay for the high end remote either. As I mentioned when this was posted, I couldn't pull the trigger for this remote at $149!

They did tell me that you could work around the Bose system but without the TV it wasn't worth it to me as they had no work around with that one.

Love my 676 and would have loved to get one as a backup at this price...I've been looking at the 720 recently...the only drawback to the 676 is the limit of 3 activity buttons (I know you can hunt down for more)...the 720 has 6 activity buttons but I like the 676 layout better...

any idea if Harmony will have a model that controls a PS3?

Right now they don't have one that is PS3 friendly. The PS3 doesn't have an IR port and only uses Bluetooth.

Thanks for the heads-up on this deal. I got it yesterday and within an hour I had it set up to control my Tivo, TV, receiver, LD player, and three DVD players. And on Saturday I'll set it up to control my HR-20, when it comes!

I got mine yesterday and early indications are this is a winner! The software downloaded the codes for my Olevia 237, HR20-700, and even my Canon HV20 HD camcorder. Since the Olevia doesn't have discreet codes for changing inputs, it has to cycle through them until it has the right one, but once it is syncronized, it works great. My wife is happy now that she doesn't have to use two remotes any longer due to the Olevia.

Question - one problem I have with my programmable remote (Home Theater Master MX-500 ) is I have to setup macros and hope that the on\off condition of the various boxes don't get out of sync (no discrete on or off codes). Does this remote provide a solution for that ? Right now it vexes my family to no end if the TV, H20, or receiver get out of sync, and the macro button simply toggles the power state.... Sure would be nice to have a button that said on, and on meant on, not toggle current power state......

It shouldn't be a problem, if you only use the remote. The "activities" (think Marcos) that is sets up assumes the power is off and asks if there are any devices that you leave on all the time. It allows you to program certain power on functions for each macro and remembers the status of the power for each device.

For example, if I used the Activity to watch the DVR, but then decide to switch to the Actvity of watching a DVD, it remembers that I turned the TV on to watch the DVR and leaves the TV alone, except to change to other input on the TV.

As soon as you power on a unit without the remote however, things can get out of whack as the reomte only remembers funtions that it does.

However, the Harmony Reomte does a great job of fixing it's problems as well. When you hit an activity button, the next screen that comes on asks if this did what you wanted it to do. I purposely got my power on out of synch to see how easy it would be to fix it - it asked specific questions about which units didn't power on and fixed everything very simply and logically. Even the Mrs has been able to fix things with the remote, and that was unheard fo before.

There is a HELP button on the remote. If you press it, it goes through and asks you if this is on, if that is on, if it's on the right input, etc. If something gets out of sync, it's great help getting everything back on. Just be ware, you need to ensure the devices are named with something you all will understand, like a stereo receiver might be called a receiver, but you might want to give it a more distguisable name.

Harmoney remotes are great fun! But they have a learning curve to get programmed perfectly, it use to be support was great and working out the kinks for you and they still are, they just don't have those little ingenious fixes I've seen in the past being offered anymore.

Hah, help doesn't help my family, I just get phone calls and yells. What we need are discrete on\off codes, and problem is solved. Cheap designs in the receivers, I think. Last I heard a discrete on\off wasn't even present in the H\HR20 series.

Yes, the Harmony works fine with the power of each device. I just got my 676 on Saturday, and have it up and running.

I also have an mx-500 - you can do the same, but need to teach the mx-500 discrete codes. It's been so long since I set mine up that I don't even remember the details of how I did it - it does take some work. There's info at http://www.remotecentral.com.

Thanks to the forum for posting that little gem.

One question though, why is Amazon so incredibly slow to ship stuff? I ordered yesterday and they estimate the ship date will be July 31, that's 8 days! They estimate delivery between August 6 - 10. I won't get it for over two weeks!

well, it arrived today, July 31, so it took 8 days total, not too bad. I'm getting my DirecTV HR20 on Saturday, so I've got plenty of time to get it programmed before then.

Mine arrived yesterday.
While it is a great little remote, the buttons are too small for me.
My hands are too big and my eyes are too old :(
If someone still wants one for $50, drop me a PM. PayPal preferred. I'll eat the shipping and taxes.

Sadly, this is the route a LOT of newer, high end remotes are taking. I do think the buttons are a bit small on the 676, but at least they are spaced enough, to prevent hitting the wrong button. That's why I returned my 880, after I got it. Those buttons, while slightly bigger are way too close together.

I've gotten use to the 676 buttons, so they aren't that bad to me now.
