Does anyone know what, if any, progress DirecTV has made with getting the LA Local Station - KCAL-9 broadcast in HD? Time Warner is the only station that has that channel in HD and I really want to watch the Lakers road games this year in HD.

TIA!

Good lord am I with you on this. Luckily my TV has a QAM tuner ( I pay for basic TW cable at about $12 amonth for the kids ) and I am able to pick it up. If not I would not have switched back to Dave as I'm a big time Dodger and Laker fan.

Have you thought about picking up the channel OTA with an antenna ?

Either way hopefully its soon.

KCAL should be part of the September roll out in my view. The station is a CBS O&E station so getting approvals should not be a problem. It is the No. 2 market in the nation and adding KCAL is a significant offering to compete with TW Cable. The CFO mentioned adding additional local stations beyong the Big 4 in his presentations to the investment commmunity.

For the time being you can try with a OTA to get it, if you can. KCAL 9 HD OTA is one of my strongest signals always hovering near 100... It's very easy to receive unless you have obstructions (hills).

Depending on where you are in SoCal, you should be able to put up a set of rabbit ears and pick up KCAL. They were late to the HD game, but they have a strong signal and all of their news, Dodger and Laker games are in HD.

Since they are a CBS O&O, I would expect them and KCOP 13-1 (which is Fox O&O) to go up by the end of the year. KCOP 13-1 is not showing anything in HD, except those lame telenovelas that they aren't really doing anymore. They can't even do the Angel games in HD (LAME!).

Depends on how everything shakes out once they start putting up more Locals.

I pick up KCAL OTA in Encino just fine. Give it a shot.

KCOP can get choppy sometimes, although it seems like the D* SD picture got clearer at some point in the last few months, so I've switched back to watching it off the sat most of the time. I think maybe D* started picking up the digital feed rather than the analog feed for uplinking the SD channel. Anyone else see this or is my mind making it up?

Directv, needs to get busy and put KCAL HD on before the Lakers take the floor.

On a Laker board (lakersground.net) I guess we'll see if it's true next wednesday.

Any word in when other markets will start getting their "second tier" HD locals?

i.e. I'm in Las Vegas and would like to at least see the CW in HD for Reaper. Cox just added the channel to their lineup. Should I expect DirecTV to follow suit?

That makes me wonder... I would almost be willing to predict that Directv is going to launch a large amount of channels next week New markets and additional stations in exsisting ones... KCOP hasn't actually shown anything in HD for ages.... and the only thing on that station that matters is.. The Angeles (can you please find the HD button before the season starts). Any word on 56-1 and PBS?

KDOC LA56 doesn't have any HD either... I get them OTA and there's no difference in quality that I can see.

KCET-DT and KOCE-DT do put out a lot of good HD programming but as of yet no information on when and if they will be rolled out. I wouldn't stand out in the rain waiting.

The OTA version of 56-1 is defintely better than the SD Sat version of 56.
That being said, since they are all old rerun tv, doubtful they will have anything anytime soon.

If KCOP does not show the Angels in HD this year, then I think they should be required to turn in their FCC license and go home.

HD is not mandated. The only requirement from the FCC is they have a digital signal in ATSC.

50-1 (KOCE) is almost all HD, but it's a different feed than the analog SD feed of KOCE (which is also on 50-2 or some other digital sub channel).

For me, 56-1 is a LOT better picture quality for Ducks games than the analogue version of 56. That's why I'm interested. I am hoping that 56-1 will go HD with Ducks games soon, but who knows....

<bump>

There is a thread in this section that claims KCAL9 will debut in glorious, bone-chiling HD on Wednesday of this week...

The problem is that, other than the Ducks, they have no original programming. All they have are old reruns of Cheers and Saved by the Bell and Wally George. I doubt they are going to do anything other than transmit digitally until something ($$$) comes up to change their mind.

Probably true... except that KCOP shows no HD either... Eventually we will see all locals off of a digital stream instead of an SD feed.
