Interesting article from CNET News.com:

Next year, Intel plans to simplify its processor branding strategy by de-emphasizing two of its major brands, Viiv and vPro, and consolidating all of its marketing around the Core brand, CNET News.com has learned. The move will keep Viiv and vPro on the little sticker affixed to a PC--ground zero for chip marketing--but it will end Intel's attempts for now to recreate the success of its Centrino marketing in other areas.

What funny there...

ViiV isn't a "processor" branding..
It is an overall system configuration thing.

And really the major portion of ViiV... is the Media Server...

This might be a good thing, for people who do not want a Intel PC, or have a mac when it comes to the HR20. viiv = bad. I don't know if D* attempted to contact apple to make the HR20 work with iTunes. Than again who knows what kind of hoops Apple would have put D* through. But it would have been nice and would be so much more simple to setup. But what do I know, iTunes is the #1 music store, let alone the ability to get movies, and works on Mac/PC regardless of CPU.

Does iTunes work with ANY non-apple external media player? (just curious... as I honestly can't stand the iTune software (on Windows))

The ViiV Media Server: Setup for the most part, was point it to your media files... and authorize components to access it.

Actually I didn't......
I actually get nausiated at the 10 million different iPod accessories out there... I personal feel other portable flavors are better, but Apple certainly new how to market that little thing... (I just love how they days after the iPhone goes on sale, they announce a smaller/cheaper one... but anyway... that is for another thread)

So... I don't keep up much on what other accessories are out there for iTunes/iPod...

Honsetly, I dont know. I dont use it to send files to my MP3 player or phone. I am with you on the cant stand iTunes on windows, I have both OSX and XP/Vista and it is by far better on OS X. Kinda like WMP on OS X not so good, very bad at best.

My thinking is a cross platfourm program (not to say there arn't workarounds). No matter what CPU/hardware you have it will work. May that be AMD, Intel, Intel Mac, or PPC Mac. iTunes just happened to be the first to come to mind, mostly becouse it is alredy out there in the masses. This will still leave the linux guys in the cold though. That and I highly dought D* would want to make/support sutch a program.

Haveing an agreement with a widely used music store would only help, look what it did for motorolia and there rocker phone, there are others just cant think of them right now.

At any rate, viiv is a very good consept it just does not have the support it needs, both Microsoft and Apple have been working hard at there owne version useing this consept. Infact all of Apple's Intel Mac's could be ViiV all the hardware is there, but Apple does not want to support viiv.

Cross platform would be ideal and Twonky is the closest thing we have right now. The major disadvantage is that it's not free ($40). Also, it's limited on it's transcoding ability (only music plugins available are mp3 and flac.)

It seemed when we had the 0x168 media share software, most everyone was happy. I almost wish that they would have kept the same "under the hood" code with the new GUI.

The Slimserver software used with the Squeezebox wireless music player (formerly by Slim Devices, recently bought out by Logitech) can optionally use the iTunes database as its source.

I own (and love) my Squeezeboxes, but don't use the iTunes feature (or iTunes at all). I find iTunes to perform pretty horribly with a large music collection, as well as lacking features that I need (and I don't use the iTunes store).
