From the book "Digital Remote Control User Guide"

Pg 9
If you start this procedure and at any time do not press a button within 20 seconds, the remote will end the procedure automatically.

1. Press the MENU button to display the MAIN menu.
2. Select the SYSTEM SETUP option. This displays the SYSTEM SETUP menu.
3. Select the INSTALLATION option to display the INSTALLATION AND SETUP menu.
4. Select the SYSTEM INFO option. Note the number in the Remote Address field.
5. Press and hold the SAT button (about 3 seconds) until all mode key backlights come on, then release.
6. use the number pad buttons to enter a number from 1 to 15. The light will blink off after each digit is entered then return to a steady light.
7. Press, the POUND (#) button, If the code entered is valid for the remote, the SAT mode light flashes 3 times.
8. Press ther RECORD button. The number in the Remote Address field should match the one you input.
9. To verify the code, press the SAT mode button. Then press the POUND (#) button twice. The light will flash the address.
10. Select CANCEL to exit.

Good luck !

does this apply to the black remotes with the dark gray keys?
I don't have a SAT or # button :(

I have mode key that changes to each device (sat, tv, vcr, aux) and I have a 9 pad number pad plus a 0 and a recessed Address button and a Recall button. if there was a # on the recall it has long since worn off :(

Call Dish - the tech support should be able to walk you through it...

Or go buy a "Blue Button Remote", for which this procedure DOES work...

This MIGHT be covered on channel 101 - but I haven't watched it in quite a while

It's covered in the 3000-4000 manual available at Dish Network's site (under the "technology" tab).

Unplug all other UHF receivers in the house.
If the receiver is on ADDRESS 1, you need to set the remote back to ADDRESS 1.
Get to the system information screen (MENU-6-1-3)
Change the REMOTE CONTROL address to the NEW number.
Press RECORD on the remote.
The screen will flash and show you the NEW address number near the bottom of the screen.
DONE.
