View Full Version : Woke up this morning...All Shows Erased!

davidmg1

Last night I had about a dozen or so shows recorded, woke up this morning and all were erased!!

My search history and show history were also gone.

My to do list was intact and it had begun recording shows again this morning.

All I did was power down the TV and DVR prior to going to bed. There were no power outages during the night, no storms, etc...

Any ideas??

How do I check for software, I've only had the unit for about 3 weeks BTW.

Hold "Info" for 3 seconds and a screen will pop up. Scroll down a bit and you will see the current software version and when it was downloaded.

Yesterday morning, my -700 was "locked up". I couldn't power it on. I had to RBR and then it got hung up at the "getting info from satellite" screen. Reforced a download, and it came up. All my recordings were there. The guide showed upcoming shows to be recorded, but the to do list was empty. Software reboot, and everything appears to be back to 100 %. My other -700 had no issues. Definitely not a clean software upgrade.

Yes Gary looks like you were correct. It downloaded this morning at 4:48AM.

Bummer.

Maybe we should notify DirecTV about this so it doesn't happen to anyone else!!

The "To Do" list will always be empty after a reboot. It needs time to rebuild.

Well, you may have just told them (these threads are often monitored by D*). And it is too late for everyone else, as everyone should be on 0x17E now.

That's not entirely correct. The shows in the near future are populated immediately.

Mine downloaded 0x17E last night,also(HR20-100).All programming/to do list was still there. However,I've only had it for 5 days and yesterday it became totally unresponsive to the remote. So I had to do a RBR.....not exactly confidence inspiring after 4 days of ownership:(

For what it's worth, I had the same thing happen, as Rubbernecker, but I have a 100. Mine happen AFTER I updated to 0x17E. In my case, the machine locked up during the network setup and I had to red button it. After I did that, I lost all my recordings, todo list, schedules, history and prior searches. However, I did NOT lose my caller ID listings. Go figure.

**EDIT**
I should clarify, mine was not an automatic download. I forced a download of the CE during the first windows, last Friday. The lockup, happened a day later, when I was trying to get my wireless connection working. When it was backing up a screen, it got stuck and I had to use the Red button. After that is when I lost my shows. It did not happen during the software update, itself.

I have a bunch of stuff on my HR20-100. I'll be a bit upset if this update wipes it all out before I can watch it.

It's a long shot but did you try unplugging the unit for 5-10 minutes and restarting it?

After the update loads and installs itself, it is supposed to rebuild any lists of shows, etc. If you have ever watched an update, you will see a diaglog box come up at the very last instant before the picture returns, around 99% of the update. I would do a soft reset of the recorder and see if it returns.

great... I have my install scheduled for Friday. I sure hope this is not common as this really lowers my level of confidence in this DVR that from everything I've read the past 2-3 weeks in making my decision to switch has been stable. Losing all programs overnight doesn't seem thaaaat stable. argh.

We're all here to help people when that does happen, but luckily it's a rare occurrence. At this point I've had probably 40 software downloads and not one of them was responsible for all my programming being erased.

I hear ya on this one. I just scheduled my install for Tuesday for 2 HR20's (I need my Yankees in HD afterall) after agonizing over leaving TiVo for about 6 months. But I'll give it a shot. I get to keep my HR10's so worst case is I just signed up for a 2 year commitment and can use my HR10's until they shut them down.

To those that have had this happen, particular those that it happened to as part of the software upgrade...

Can you describe your setup a bit?
Which model (if it happened last night, most like an -100)
How full was your drive (approx)
How many Series Links did you have
Have you been having any other issues recently

Anything else that could describe your setup, basically trying to gather information if this is issolated/random or if there is a pattern to those that it has affected

GaryNH
07-25-07, 08:50 AM
HR20-100S
About 30% used
10 Series (unaffected)
Other than the overall issues that affect the HD DVRs, nothing out of the ordinary

Came down this morning at 5 and saw that the Big Blue Eye was on, normally associated with a restart since I keep it turned off. My custom favorites name was gone (usual for a restart) but the list itself was intact. Didn't notice until later that all of my content was gone.

A soft restart from GUI might bring them back???

I had 2 1hr programs recorded at the time(I was using internal drive, as I didn't have external drive setup yet).
I had 5 series links
The only other issue, which precipitated me having to press the red reset button was that lockup on the network page. I would go into advanced setup and try to connect. It would fail to connect and I'd then hit the "Back" button. The screen would then show the menu background(blue with white), but no text or buttons and I'd be locked, at that point. The lockup has happened twice so far, but I only lost my recordings once.

Arent most of the lost recordings incidents directly related to bad/failing hard drives that just havent completely surfaced yet? During the reboot/restart, it checks the drive and if it finds some corruption it cant recover from, it formats, correct?

Maybe, but, in my case, it definitely didn't format because my caller ID list was still there, plus all my system settings were still in tact. So it didn't find anything wrong with the drive. It could also just be a bug in the software causing the issue and there might not be anything wrong with the drive itself.

It is a safe assumption, that if you are not posting... that your HR20's didn't have an issue with the software upgrade.

I've been through a TON of updates and never lost a thing, so I wouldn't be too worried. Anything "could" happen, but the odds are strongly on your side that you won't lose anything permanently, as the OP is posting.

Just give the HR20 time to "settle" after it has done an update or reboot...it takes time to rebuild lists and indexes, etc. If it doesn't look right after an hour or two, that's the time to start worrying (and keep in mind the Guide Data can take a day or two to completely rebuild, unless it has been cached)

I've been lurking here for a while, just got a HR-100 on 7/14. Went to my playlist today and noticed all of my previous recordings were deleted. All that was left was what was recorded today. My drive was about 30% full before now 96% free, I have around 20 series links and I've had no issues before this besides unlearning my Tivo habits :). I'm in Phoenix,AZ for what it's worth.

This thread had me worried, but all is fine. My HR20-100 did update the night before last, but I didn't realize it because it didn't give me any messages about it. I just noticed that things were suddenly, but slightly different. Using the handy "hold down the info button for 3 seconds trick", thanks Earl, I saw that update had been delivered. Everything seems to be working though, and all my recordings were intact. Hopefully, the super stretch bug is gone with this one.

I am happy to report that when I got home last night and checked, my HR20-100 was fine. All shows intact, all settings the way I left them. Plus I now have FF autocorrection. Not as smooth as TiVo, but I'm sure it'll get tweaked.

Almost forgot my favorite new feature -- not having to press 'Enter' to change the channel I key in. This is the way it should always have been IMHO.

Can you describe your setup a bit?

Well it happenned to me too

Went down to watch TV and the unit would not respond to the remote or to the front panel buttons. Had to push the red button to restart it. Even then I had to do that about 4 or 5 times because it would always lock up on the "step 2 of 2" screen. I've only had the thing a week so it was less than 10% full. I lost everything: recorded shows, prioritizer/to do list, and the custom guide I set up. Very disappointing.

I've got a -100 and had between 15 and 20 series set to record. Can't check if I lost caller id data because I haven't connected the phone line yet.

This is the fourth time I've had trouble rebooting the machine. Once right after install when I was rebuilding my home theater I had to unplug it: took several red button resets to get going. Several days later after power failure same thing, several cycles of the reset button. Then again with the software update. Lastly, I used the Reboot option via software (based on a long shot suggestion in this thread) to see if my stuff would come back, it didn't. At least the first two times I didn't loose all of my recorded shows and customizations.

I love the HD picture, but I'm not too thrilled about the apparent fragility of this unit.

My hr20-100 downloaded the update last night and it worked all day just fine. I didn't lose any saved programs and my to do list was fine. Then around 10pm tonight it just froze up. It was stuck on 720p and wouldn't lock in to any programming. I tried off air and d*. I hit the red reset button and it seemed to fix it. This is the second time my dvr has froze up after a firmware upgrade. I'm not really happy since I've had it for about two weeks now.
