View Full Version : HR20 Dish Installation Question
So I have an install on Friday AM going from a Series2 DirecTV and Phase I Dish to the HR20 and AU9-S. The current dish is secured on the fascia board on the eave of a side cutout of the roof on the side of my house. I am in the Orlando FL area so most likely will see Mastec?
From all the great information available on this site I don't believe this location will offer adequate support for the larger dish since the fascia is only 3/4" thick so I am potentially looking at a roof install. I also have a potential tree issue in the current spot as a neighbor's Magnolia keeps getting taller.
My roof has joists with about 24" centerlines and is shingled and has 1x12 wood decking, not plywood. and I am a bit paranoid about some idiot installer drilling through it. My questions are:
1. I assume the footing bracket will be installed so the center two holes are on the joist and the side mounting holes will be drilled into the decking with the monopoles attached to the next adjacent joists, is that correct?
2. Do the installers lay the dish mounting bracket directly on the shingles and drill it down or do they move them out of the way?
3. Is roofing cement applied into and around each drilled hole or only underneath the entire dish mounting bracket after the holes are drilled and it is screwed down? Do the installers bring their own roofing cement?
4. Is roofing cement applied on the top of the Dish Mounting Bracket?
Thanks in advance for any experienced feedback. I will be on the roof with the installer watching him like a hawk.

Those are all questions that you should really discuss with the installer BEFORE you let them begin work on your roof. Some installers actually try to avoid roof mounts because of the potential issues.

In Florida with the beating shingles get with the intense sun and rain, I would mount it anywhere, other than the roof. If your house is CBS, have it wall mounted, extremely sturdy when mounted with the right Tapcons and monopoles.

Thats the plan anyway. Sometime finding the joists can be a real PITA. But yes. The two center bolts/holes into the joist, the four corners into the decking. The short brace right in line with the joist, the long brace off to one side into an adjacent joist.
2. Do the installers lay the dish mounting bracket directly on the shingles and drill it down or do they move them out of the way?
I drill right thorugh the shingles.
3. Is roofing cement applied into and around each drilled hole or only underneath the entire dish mounting bracket after the holes are drilled and it is screwed down? Do the installers bring their own roofing cement?
We use bishops tape under the foot. That may vary from HSP to HSP.
4. Is roofing cement applied on the top of the Dish Mounting Bracket?
We don't put anything on top of the foot. No need if its under.

Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
and you live in hurricane country
you wouldn't catch me doing that roof install
Thanks for the feedback. Unfortunately due to LOS issues I believe a roof install is the only option I have. I will post some feedback after the installation.

Here is my issue. I just connected the HR20-100. Satellite 103 is barely coming in. Most of the numbers were zero. this means my locals are not being viewed. I get searching for signal (771). I was always able to receive local stations even in HD with my HR20-700. Now when I checked the HD locals on that receiver the signal was very broken like heavy rain was interupting the signal.
Anyway, I had a tech support guy try and figure out what was wrong with the new HR20 to no avail. He is having a tech come out to check the dish and the multi-switch on saturday afternoon. I don't get it. If the HR10-250 was receiving locals, albeit not HD, and the HR20-700 receives the locals, why is the new receiver not receiving the locals. Aside note, the guide on the newly connected HR20 is showing locals that don't correspond with the locals in my area.
Any help or suggestions would be appreciated.

Ok, this morning the guide is now showing the correct local stations and the ones that are broadcasting in HD are being viewed. I looked at satellite 103 and the transponder signals and first there are 7 of them. 4 out of 7 show 0 and the other 3 are around 30. should I still have a tech come out or just call up D* and cancel?

30 is way too low. At the slightest hint of bad weather you will lose your signal. I'd definitely still have the tech come out. You should be getting some of those transponders in the 80's. It sounds as thoe either the dish wasn't aligned properly or the multiswitch isn't right.

thanks for responding. go figure. at the time the locals weren't broadcasting in my area, so the tech had nothing to go by on the tv and guessed that it was aligned.

Get a tech out and see what he has to say. I have had great experiences and learned a lot from the tech's I have had. Twice they came up with far better solutions than I had thought of.
