I tired searching for this, but bband converter doesn't get many hits from the forum search.

When we had the HR20 installed, the tech did not put up the AT9 dish - we do not have local HD through D* yet, so he said it wasn't necessary; said it was to big to put where our 3 LNB dish is, the wind would rip is off - I didn't understand that since it would have been lag bolted to the framing of our shed, which is part of the structure of the main house. Plus he didn't install the bband converters, there weren't any HD channels that required them at the time, he said they weren't important

I was going to try to install these myself; I really do not want another tech in the house. Can I connect them inside near the HR20, or does it need to placed as close as possible to the dish? Will they even work with a 3 LNB or do I have finagle my way into an AT9?

The BBC's need to go between the SAT lines and the HR20. You will need the 5 LNB dish to receive the new MPEG4 HD channels.

In addition to what BMoreRavens said. You'll want/need the 5-lnb for the upcoming new HD channels. Untill then though, the BBCs won't do a thing for you.

Since the installers wouldn't put the dish up, do you think there's any chance D* will just send me one so I can install it myself, then call a tech to align it?

From what I have heard they will make you have a installer come out to do it. Since he would not do it maybe they could send another installer out that will do it or maybe even a supervisor. If that does not happen maybe they will send it to you. But You will have to call and ask.
