So here's the deal, I currently have 2 HR10's that I am hesitant to get rid of. But seeing as all of these new fandangled HD channels are coming in a couple of months I decided to take the plunge after getting offered a good deal (19.95/ea for 2 HR20's). I come to find out after some more reading that since I live in an MDU building, the technology is not there for me to get the new HD channels and may not be there until early next year at which point I plan on moving out of my current apartment. So hence, if I keep my order I end up with a 2 year commitment and no new abilities. If I cancel my order, I keep my nicely upgraded TiVo's but lose any ability to get the new HD channels and possibly ANY HD channels (except OTA) in the near future. Any thoughts? I'm left feeling very confused...
You appear to be stuck between the proverbial rock and hard-place.
It is true that if you are connected to an MDU distribution system, you are dependent upon whatever signal they are providing to you, and at this moment none distribute the new Ka signals. Technology to do so is not even available yet, so your observation that the technology may not be there until early next year is correct. And then, only if the company managing your MDU installation makes the upgrade.
Now the tough question. Do you take the good deal you've got and get the HR20's now, or do you wait until after you move and then upgrade (and possibly pay more)? If you plan to stay with DirecTV, then the 2 year committment shouldn't matter. If you are not sure, then I would definately wait.

Do you have any way around the building's distribution system?

I would go on the side of no on this one. I do live on the south side of the building, however I am 20 stories up and the windows only slide open a few inches. My better half certainly would not allow me to have a dish inside the apt either (and the cat would probably find it a good napping place). This is also a rental.

Ok so to add another variable to the equation... I decided I really wanted to keep my TiVo's so I called up to cancel. The girl from ordering looks at my order and says "Wow, you got a great deal! They told us this week that we can't give them away for $19.95 anymore". So.... HELP!

get them, keep them active for one month, then deactivate them and use the old tivo receivers until you move to a new place.
