I ran into a very odd problem last night that I'll have to call a variation on the super-crop bug.

I had the HR20 is 1080i crop mode on the discovery channel then switched over to the MLB game mix. Of course I was now in supercrop mode so I just wanted to go to stretch. I press the format button and nothing. Tried repaetedly after that and nothing, then tried the front panel "Res" button and again nothing. Put into Native mode w/ no change either. I then did a menu--> setup--> restart on the box.

After it came back up I had the exact same problem. Repeatedly tried format on remote and Res on the front panel with no luck. tried changing the channel and I couldn't, it just stayed on the game mix. I then tried to restart it one more time, but once I got to the setup screen I could still see the red highlighted box from the mix channel through the page and instead of controling the highlighted menu choices I was actually switching the game mix box through the menu. I was stuck so I had no choice but to RBR.

After it came back up again I was able to change channels, All HD programs look fine, but when switching to an SD channel it goes to super crop and cant be changed again. Tried Native On/ Off again and no help.

Anyone else ever had similar problems? It still isn't right and I hate to think about having to get a replacement box as I have 7 past UFC fights stored on here. :nono2:

I don't know about the res button (I only used 1080i) but I know that the format button is disabled when using the Mix and Active channels. I don't know why, but it has been that way for some time.

So, if the format button works everywhere but mix and active channels you're ok.

The format button doesn't work with HD channels.
I'm not sure if it works on an SD channel up converted to 720p or 1080i.

hmmm.... I'm about 95% certain that on MLB game mix I've been able to change it from strech to pillar box formats from the remote, And 100% certain I'm able to change it from 720p to 1080i from the remote. ( I have 2 HD sets connected, one via HDMI and one by component. The component TV doesn't support 720p so I have to change it every night when I watch that set in the living room)

At any rate the format button doesn't work on other channels. Its stuck in crop mode. Since HD channels display correctly it seems like native is turn on (which it isn't) and it "sees" SD channels as being crop format.

Drop down to 480i or 480p and see what it does then.

Actually the format button does work on HD channels (atleast prior to 17E, I haven't looked at it since the national release), only it controls the composite and S-video output formats.

Thats the problem. I can't. Stuck in 1080i crop.

On second though, I'll remove 1080i as an supported resolution and leave 480i as the only resolution.

I think that is only true if you have your TV set to Standard not Widescreen. If it's in Standard, the format button works on HD's not SD's, in Widescreen it's the opposite... and this is only true with composite and S-Video, not on HDMI or component.

Ah, thanks, I'm not connected through S-Video/composite so I didn't know.

Yeh I just use that to dump some shows to my DVD burner to free up disk space.

I was able to force it down to 480i leaving that as the only resolution checked in the setup.

Lamon had said that the format button doesn't work in the mix channels or active channel, but I just tested and it does, but only few a few seconds when first changed to that channel (about as long as the channel banner stays up).

Just a few minutes ago the system overlays (info banner, menu screens playlist)quit displaying, but apparently still function. To explain what I mean : I was able to hit guide, scroll down a few times, and then hit "select" button and the channel changed, but I never saw the guide on screen or the info banner after the channel change. Was able to do same to start a previously recorded show. RBR fixed this problem.

I've never had a major problem with either of my HR20's until this. Either the new firmware doesn't like this box or this things about to goto D* heaven. :crying_sa
