XM unveiled Monday that the company will be expanding its real-time satellite data service for GPS
navigation by 29 markets. The move will enable the company's XM NavTraffic subscribers to access
the real-time traffic information in a total of 79 major and secondary North American markets
beginning July 31.
The 29 new XM NavTraffic markets include:
Albany, NY Lancaster-York, PA Raleigh, NC
Albuquerque, NM Lincoln, NE Richmond, VA
Allentown, PA Louisville, KY Rochester, NY
Birmingham, AL Little Rock, AR Spokane, WA
Colorado Springs, CO Mobile, AL Syracuse, NY
Dayton, OH Naples, FL Toledo, OH
Grand Rapids, MI New Orleans, LA Tucson, AZ
Greensboro, NC Oklahoma City, OK Tulsa, OK
Greenville, SC Omaha, NE Wilkes Barre, PA
Harrisburg, PA Portsmouth, NH
The company said drivers in these areas will now be able to learn about traffic incidents like accidents,
road closures and construction issues as they occur.
In addition, XM said four of its current markets that receive the service will benefit from expanded traffic
data coverage within their respective metro areas: Houston, Sacramento, San Francisco and St. Louis
will have increased traffic flow coverage.
Traffic information for the service is aggregated by NAVTEQ Traffic from data sources that include police
and emergency services, commercial traffic data providers, road sensors, traffic cameras, eyewitness
reports, and real- time aircraft surveillance reports, XM said. The service is available as a factory-installed
feature on new 2008 models from Acura, Cadillac, Infiniti, Lexus and Nissan, as well as through several
aftermarket units from Alpine, Garmin, Kenwood and Pioneer.
XM NavTraffic is expected to be available in 200,000 vehicles by the end of 2008, the company said. www.SkyReport.com - used with permission
