my dad had been with Direct tv for 9 years and is on a no mirroring fee for 5recievers (i could no believe this at first) so now he wants the Hr20 Direct says he needs to upgrade his plan or buy a Hr20 outright, the rep at Direct said it would be a lot cheaper to buy one outright from a 3rd party,is this somthing that can be done? i thought these were all 100% leases units,he wants HD and PVR bad.... any ideas.

Welcome Aboard.
They can be bought for full price. Smoething like 700-799 for the HR20. It would not be leased.
Also, any new activiation for hte HR20 comes w/ a 2 year programming committment.

I got it ,so he pays more to keep his old plan , 700-800 for the HR20 and then its still a lease,so he is SOL, im glad i got mine free.,maybe a little more talking to the retention dept might help.
if he pays the full price outright he will "own" the receiver but he will not keep his "old plan" whether he owns or lease the receiver he will pay that mirroring fee for his account for new receivers activated. From what the way you explained it his account is an older rental account but any receiver added after 2003 will charge the mirroring fee to hs account so there will be no gain with him paying the full price for the HR20

I bought my HR20 from ebay for alot cheaper then $700 around (4) months ago. When I activated it I was told it would not be leased and it was marked as owned on my account. Jeff

As I understand things, if the OPs dad is a former Primestar customer, he might be grandfathered into a no mirroring fee arrangement, even with new equipment activations.
Cheers,
