View Full Version : I'm preparing....the Indians without Jim Thome

In the new Baseball Weekly - er, make that Sports Weekly - there's an article entitled New reality limits high-stakes bidding. But of course, the Phillies are simply going to OUTBID EVERYONE simply because they can. The timing is right, and to hell with what every other GM and team thinks they should do about free-agent salaries.

Anyway, the article leads off with, of course, Jim Thome. It says...

Quote:
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Indians offered an incentive-laden four-year deal for about $46 million. The Phillies say they'll blow away the Indians' offer this week, and the Orioles are keeping a close watch....
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

In other words, much like the Rangers, the Phillies are going to bid against themselves for Thome. They'll assure him that when he joins their cast of young players, they'll be the next Anaheim Angels. While that's certainly possible, it's also certainly possible that everything doesn't pan out as hoped for, does it? In fact, things DON'T turn out as hoped for more often than they do.

Two years ago everyone was convinced that the White Sox's young pitching was going to make them the team to beat in the AL Central for the next several years. It didn't work out that way, did it?

Fine. Let the Phillies throw all that money at Jim. If he goes, so be it. There will be plenty of people bitching that Dolan didn't want to spend the money. And, much like Manny, most Cleveland fans will be grateful in a couple of years that the Indians aren't locked in to a 6 year/$15 million per deal with a guy with a bad back. They'll be thrilled that the Tribe can spend that money locking up good, young pitchers.

"I am starting to prepare myself for a post-thome world (too many holes....no power hitting prospects....Broussard at first....Snyder at 3rd.....losing 3-2 games.....no contending until 2006 and beyond...ouch). Same as it ever was."

If I could only have a few of those power hitting prospects back.... What about Belle.....err, I mean Baerga...no, I mean Ramirez.....no wait, what about Thome.....err, Sexson.....scratch that, how about Giles.....drat, how about Burnitz.....err, maybe Branyan?
Boy, were we spoiled!

Time to launch a "Bring the Indians back to WUAB campaign. It's just bad long term business strategy to have 0 games on local OTA tv.

BIG free agent pickup isn't necessarily a good thing. Look at Mo with the Angels. A complete bust. Just because you sign a "big name", it doesn't mean it's going to work out all of the time. Indians would be stupid to lose Thome. I saw the sports last night and Philly doing a huge welcome for him with the electrician union and the sign at the Vet, but the Indians are making a huge mistake on this one even if he does leave the AL.

local news about it (I don't really have much of an opinion):

The city courts Jim Thome (http://www.philly.com/mld/inquirer/4470025.htm)
The Phillies rolled out the red carpet for the free-agent first baseman. Union electricians and Flyers fans pitched in.

Brass paints town Phillies red for Thome (http://www.philly.com/mld/dailynews/sports/4472131.htm)

John I will guarendamntee you that Thome will return and NOT go to Philly.....I mean think about it....The first time he gets in one of his slumps or his back starts hurting those Philly nutjob fans will start their bitching and Thome would soon be wishing he was back where he was happy...therefore he isnt leaving.....(My apologizes to all the Philly nutjob fans who might be reading this....:D

DCSholtis, I hope your right.

What about Shapiro's plan for the Indians?

When the Indians dealt Robbie Alomar to New York for Matt Lawton and a bundle of prospects, I was OK with it. I liked the prospects, still think Lawton will pay off, and felt Robbie would leave after 2002 anyways. When the Indians dealt Bartolo Colon to the Expos and officially began the rebuilding process, I was OK with it. I love the prospects recieved, and like Alomar, figured Colon would depart anyways for more money when he became a free agent after 2003. The Indians then dealt away the majority of their veterans for prospects, and again, I was pleased. Not only were they building to contend in 2-3 years, but they had freed up cash to re-sign Jm Thome. Shapiro said they would make an offer to Thome that would be very hard to refuse. He said they wanted to give him a deal that would make Thome an Indian for life. I was happy, as building around Thome and Omar, I felt the Tribe could be back on top in 2004. Now I'm hearing all they offered was 11 M for 3 or 4 years with incentives? This is disgraceful. Not only are they BSing Jim [not in $, in years], but they're BSing us. All I gotta say is if the Indians dont make a serious offer to Jim, this team takes 10 steps backwards in direction. You lose Thome, Burks will prolly wanna go, Omar might too...Is this the turning point of the franchise? And if the offer is true, and Thome leaves, is this plan all BS now?

I was *so* disappointed when the petty feud between Dan Duquette and Mo Vaughn ended up pushing him out of the Red Sox organization. Mo never looked like the same player to me after leaving Fenway Park for some reason. I know he was angry when Roger Clemens left here for Toronto and his playing weight has since been a big issue with regards to injuries. I was actually hoping myself that the Sox would bring Vaughn back here last season with Mike Port (interim GM) at the helm hoping he could rekindle some of the old magic from days long past. Mo was born to hit em over the green monster. Plus he really likes The Foxy Lady down in Providence, RI.

Hey John Im hearing 11M over 5 years with a front office job guarentee after his career ends....Now as far as deferred payments there will probably be some but how much I dont know and havent heard......Looks like the Buffalo Indians for the next few yrs....Although Peter Gammons says that the word around baseball about the new manager is that hes the new "Mike Scoscia".....Now THAT I gotta see......the other thing that upsets me is that if Thome leaves we're never gonna be able to see him on TV cause Phillies games around a part of MLB EI....

As far as I am concerned, the Indians should be in a league with the Tigers, Blue Jays, Cubs & White Sox - called The Great Lakes League - minor league front offices determined to put minor league teams on the field!

Hope Jim is smart enough NOT to sign w/ the Phillies. The team sucks and the fans will be all over him if he ever goes in a slump.
It's a tought place to play! Hope he stays w/ the Indians!

Close to the end of his career looking to cash out....don't be surprised if he goes.
