Hey i currently have a standard receiver.. If I buy a vip211 online, would i be able to just swap the dishnet card on the receiver and make it work?

No.
Each receiver comes with its own card (either as an insertable card or built-in inside the box). You can't move cards around. If you buy a receiver, you still have to call Dish and have them activate it.
Make sure you can get info about the receiver (R00 and S00 numbers) and call Dish in advance of purchase to see if they will activate the receiver for you if you buy, and to make sure it is not a stolen or leased unit not elligible to be sold.
Ask DISH what they will charge you to upgrade through them? You may need a new dish for HD they should include it. The 211 card is built into the circuit board.

yea i did that and they said they will charge me 99 dollars and then it comes with a 100 dollar rebate so =]
