First off, I am new here so hello to everyone. I have a rather long and confusing(well at least I sure am) question. I am the super of a 7 story,62 unit building that currently has DirecTv installed in the building. No one in the buiiding has any HD setup and I would like to upgrade.

I will try to discuss the setup as best I can. We have a single round dish on the roof with no obstructions what so ever. There is a single line that runs down the entire building through the stairwell. In each stairway there is a box and the line is split into a small splitter that says "one port pass" on it and then continues down and repeats on each floor. On each foor a line comes out of that pass and goes into a big splitter that feeds each apartment. There are 2 "Auto Level Amplifers" in the line, 1 on the top floor, and 1 on the 2nd floor. There is one line coming into my apartment and is split to 3 tv's. There are 2 SD boxes and 1 TivoR10 box. The Tivo is hooked up with a Sonora d575d Destacker.

Before I call our installer, I wanted to find out as much as I could. I know that the dish needs to be changed but how will that affect the others using SD boxes, and what other changes will be needed. I plan on keeping the R10 and 1 SD box along with a new HR20.

I hope I had enough info for everyone (and hopefully not too much!!) to figure out what the best road would be. Thanks ahead of time for any help.
Chris

:welcome_s to the forum.

With the number of units, you would need to have an dish farm on the roof [dozens of them].
Or upgrade the MDU system you have now. This is way over a "standard" installation equipment.
Right now the system isn't in place for the five SATs. I believe there is a system [old] for the three SATs, but all of the new stuff doesn't work with it.
Here is a link that seems [to me] to be your best bet to contact.

Well, if it is just Chris that wants to upgrade it is just a matter of a new slimline dish and the four cables to his apartment. Of course, if the whole building wants to be HD capable with DIRECTV then wait for the SWM MDU solution... Two dishes is a heck of a lot better than a farm of them.

There must be a more efficient way though -- call the pro's.

There is a spare wire that is not connected to the sat and runs all the way to the first floor. Is there any way to hook that wire up to a 2nd sat and connect it to 3 receivers total, 2 Dvrs and one SD box?

no, but maybe you could pull extra wire through with that wire.

Focusing on just your needs:
A new dish on the roof and four coax off of it will feed a multi-switch that could have 8 or 16 outputs.
Soon but not yet is a new multi-switch called a SWM [single wire multiswitch] that could be mounted near the dish and with one or two wires [coax] run 5 or 8 receivers.
