View Full Version : Local HD channel Interference
Prior to an HR20 upgrade last month, I had a DirecTv HD receiver. I was also using an external antenna mounted on the roof to receive the local HD OTA channels. I was experiencing no problems receiving a solid signal on all the available local HD channels via OTA. After the HR20 upgrade, I am experiencing an extremely brief pixilation or interference every 28 seconds on one of the local HD stations (Channel 11 - CBS). This blink-of-the-eye pixilation has been occuring every 28 seconds 24/7 for the last month. I tried to contact the local affiliate, but have received no response. This pixilation or interference does not occur either on the local SD or HD feeds from the satellite. Could this pixilation be linked to the new HR20 receiver?

What is your signal strength on the antenna signal meter? Is it solid and pretty strong, or is it high, then drops off, then back to high? You MAY have a multi-path problem. While most find the HR20 OTA tuner quite sensitive, unfortunately it has trouble dealing with multipath issues.

Thanks for your input.
I am not sure why, but I am getting readings from both the primary and secondary off-air antenna tuners. They both show 95-100 % most of the time other than when I have my glitch. Every 28 seconds the meter reading for one or both of the tuners briefly goes to "No Reception". Then the meter reading goes right back to 100. At least half of the time Tuner 1 is the one with "No Reception". Whenever one tuner shows "No Reception" for that second or so, the other tuner will show a decrease in reading down to 40-50 %. There is not a specific pattern about which tuner will show "No Reception".
I don't know what you mean by a multi-path problem. The coax cable for the external antenna is not attached in any way to the cables from the dish.

Multipath is when you receive a reflected broadcast signal in addition to the primary signal. It can be caused by a mountain range 30 miles away, or by your next door neighbors house. In the analog world, this manifested itself as "ghosting". In the ATSC digital world, in typically manifests itself as an instability in ATSC reception. It can indeed cause problems like the one you are seeing.
That's all well and good, I suppose, but doesn't really help you. It sounds like you have a very strong signal, so you may have some things to try. An attenuator on the antenna line may be a good place to start, but there are many on this board who are true experts in this area, and I am sure they will have better advice.
Another good place to start may be solidsignal.com. There is lots of good info on their site, but a quick phone call to them may be worth your time. OTA is most definitely worth it. Good luck.

To add to this: You might try moving the antenna. You may find a position where you get the primary signal almost as strong [strong enough] and can drop the reflection down to where it no longer causes the problem.

Cygnusloop and VOS:
Thanks for the explanations and suggestions. I will check out your suggestions about solidsignal.com, and the possibility of moving the antenna slightly.
When you speak about the attenuator, are you suggesting that the signal is too strong? The external antenna does have a power booster attached to the line. I have not tried to use the antenna without the power booster. Earlier I had used an indoor antenna, and really had to be particular about the placement of the antenna and its ears. I do not want to go back to that. I do enjoy the strong, steady signals produced by the fixed external antenna for all the local HD stations.
Do you have any explanations about the 28 second cycle?

Well, it's not that the signal itself is too strong, it's that the reflected signal is too strong. It's about finding the balance between the primary signal being strong enough and the reflected signal being attenuated enough so that the reflected signal doesn't cause the instability.
Turning the power booster off (or down if it has adjustment) would sure be worth a try. Be careful about just unplugging it, as it then may pass no signal at all.
VOS's suggestion about tweaking the antenna is a good one.
Let us know how it goes.
As for the 28 seconds.... :whatdidid :scratchin

If you are seeing interference every 28 seconds like clockwork, the tuner is clearly picking up interference from an external source. It's not multipath, its not your booster, its 99% something that moving the antenna or a new antenna will solve. It's probably because the tuner is more sensitive to than the old one was.
What city in Texas are you located? What station are you seeing the 28 second interference on? What is their actual channel they are broadcasting their DT signal on?

Going waaaay out on limb. How close are you to an airport/radar station?

I am located in Houston, TX. The station is Channel 11 (KHOU). I am receiving the interference on 11-1 and 11-2. I do not know the specific frequencies or anything like that.

Maybe your right, maybe not. Multipath distortion could be creating a situation where the interference is able to cause a problem. The amp could be overdriving the signal and causing distortion to a point that the external source is able to cause a problem. I do agree that the easiest fix is an antenna tweak, however.

I unplugged the power amp for the external antenna. I still receive all of the local HD stations, and do not notice any difference in the picture quality. Unfortunately, the 28 second interference continues. I am hesitant to get on the roof to change the position of the antenna, but that seems to be the only other thing that is a possibility.

Are there any rotating signs or something in you area? the 28 sec pattern does remind me of a radar dish rotating. Now radar is much higher and it shouldn't be the cause, but some large sign rotating could be the reflector, or maybe flashing lights that are emitting noise in the OTA band.
You do seem to have a very strange problem, that I would guess is due to your location/environment.

I am in a residential neighborhood with the nearest commercial area about a mile from me. I am not aware of any new business with a large rotating sign, but it might be possible.
Luckily, I also receive the same HD signal for that channel from the satellite so I am not actually losing a channel. I am very happy with my DirecTV system, but was trying to determine if I could tweak this small glitch.
Thank you for your input. If I find a solution, I will let you know.

Wow. This is really strange. Just some stupid ideas....
A timed traffic signal...
A solenoid on some home appliance...
Is there anything a PC could do to cause this...
Any other electrical or electronic device in the house...
Wow. I'm just stumped. Glad you have the channel on SAT.

I am stumped too. I don't have any new big boy toys that I have purchased in the last month that might cause the problem - just the HR20 and dish.
Thank you very much for all of your time and suggestions.

No problem at all. That's what this place is for, IMNSHO.;) (As opposed to some other forums that just turn into flame wars about who is more right. Those kind of Richard Noggins are why I don't really post over there).
This is the kind of puzzle that tends to engage me. Now, I just WANT TO KNOW!!!
What has a 28 second period, and is capable of generating RF? AAARRRRGGGHHH!!!

You may want to check out the AVS Forum for Houston OTA at
http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/showthread.php?t=452612&page=1&pp=30
Search the thread or ask questions. You will find people familiar with OTA in Houston. Provide your zip code when you ask a question there and it will help provide more detailed answers.

This problem really seemed to start on the day of the HR20 installation. Could there be something within the HR20 that could cause something on that timed cycle? I have not reported this to DirecTV.

Oh, I think it's certainly something that the HR20 is sensitive to that other tuners aren't.
BTW, the suggestion to check out your local thread over at AVS is a good one. Certainly worth asking if anyone else is seeing this phenomenon.

Actually that's not out on a limb and where I was going.
The other possible cause, which is where I asked where in texas is off-shore oil platforms where are a very real cause of TI around the Gulf of Mexico.
What side of Houston are you on? Are you out near the port, Hobby or down towards Galveston?
Really need to know which DT channel KHOU operates on as well - as I really don't feel like doing the work to look it up.

Strange. I followed the advice to check the Houston thread for AVS. There is a post from a couple of days ago from a guy with EXACTLY the same symptoms. The only difference is that he is using the H20 instead of the HR20. He is having the same 28 sec interference on the same channel. It seems like this means that the problem must either be with the DirecTV receiver (H20 and HR20) or the actual feed sent out from the station. Does that make sense?
I still do not have a solution, but at least I know others are experiencing exactly the same thing.

I am in Friendswood - about halfway between Houston and Galveston. I am about 25 miles from Galveston and the Gulf. I don't know the frequency for Channel 11 - just that they are listed as 11-1 and 11-2.

Not at all what I said.
The point was the HR20's tuners don't deal with distortion well, multipath or otherwise. If the antenna set up is tweaked to deal with the HR20's weaknesses, the problem may go away, regardless of the cause.

11 is not the real channel
It's channel 31 (roughly 575Mhz) - but I wonder if there is some type of link with the oil refineries there and some gulf platforms doing the interference....as you are clearly down in that area.
You are so close to Johnson Space Center, that would actually be my first guess as to where its coming from.
If it was widespread, you would see more of an uproar in the Houston threads.
It's clearly localized - and well out of the center of Houston.

Thanks for the information. I had not thought of NASA.
They should have a frequency coordinator on-site.
If call over there prior to the launch and tell them what you are experiencing considering they are almost across the road from you - and ask if he knows of anything around 575Mhz that would be giving you interference every 28 seconds - depending on their mood - they might be will to look at it.
Considering they clearly have the ability to look at the entire spectrum, they might be able to locate the direction of the signal - if it is not them.
Of course, with the mission this week, I am not sure you will get much of anything besides a brief conversation at best.

Clearly, nothing should be operating in the TV band to be giving you this interference - so it is most likely a harmonic.
The big question is how is the signal is getting into the IRD.
Out of curiosity, try two experiments.
First, turn to KHOU and disconnect the RG6 feeds from the Directv Dish. See if the interference continues.
If it does, disconnect the RG6 feed from the TV antenna - the screen will most likely go blank....but see if it appears to "wake up" (not a picture, but maybe a flash or something) every 28 seconds. That will probably be harder to nail down with the equipment you have at hand.
I have never heard of one, but in all honesty, I've never checked but assume there probably is a filter you could buy to put on the RG6 from the TV antenna that would choke out any frequencies above the TV band. If you could find one, you might want to try that - but clearly the newer IRD is not shielded as well - or the new, more sensitive, tuner section is somehow picking up a harmonic that is causing this problem.

This just hit me as well.
1) It could be a bad transmitter monitoring some bayou sending out a data stream
or
2) it could be a bad SMR-LMR repeater as they do send a data burst in that time frame.
As I noted, nothing really should be operating in that frequency - so it's either a transmitter putting out a spur or a harmonic.
