Wait for the series 2. It should be out real soon. The MSRP is $199 for existing subs, but I suspect there may be deals for new subs. You can go to CC and pre-order it for $199 with a 1 cent dish I believe.

Here is the Directv site showing the specs, menus, etc.

From what I have read, the Series II will not be much different - the main differences being USB ports, and a faster processor.
Hope that helps.

I have heard that the series II models will not allow hard drive swapping as the series I models will. Has anyone confirmed this?

No. People are AFRAID they won't be upgradable because the mounting bracket inside is set up for only one drive.
The original DirecTiVos had 2 drives (a 30gig + a 15 gig) and required a bracket to hold them. Later releases of these Series 1 units used a single 40 gig drive but still had the 2 drive bracket inside, making upgrades a snap.
Directv is not gonna be stupid and have TiVo create sofware that blocks upgrades, and owners of existing upgraded units would scream bloody murder if they did (me included :D )! The experts at the tivocommunity will find an easy solution for attaching the second drive inside somewhere and the software will continue to work.

HDVR2 units will be $199 at Circuit City including installation. I've read that CC also has a $50 rebate for new subs, so your first HDVR2 would be $149, then $199 for a 2nd, 3rd, etc.

In case anyone hasn't been monitoring the threads at TiVoCommunity.com, Series 2 units are available at a few mail order and online outlets, like Value Electronics. They are not available at CC or BB or any other retailers yet.

Huh? Did I miss the weather report form hell that is was snowing???
Just kidding Bob. Try the TiVo Community Forums for the latest info.
I was at Best Buy today. They had the sticker up for the HDVR2 at $249. Didn't have any actual units yet and weren't sure when they would get some. They also didn't know what deal a new sub would be able to get.
I have seen a post at another board where someone said they had a new unit. They must be in pretty short supply yet.
