It really bugs me that when I switch from my playlist to the guide, the size of the live tuner display changes ever so slightly.

I can be anal, but it just doesn't look finished :)

+1. I noticed this last night for some reason. I must have switched between list/guide 20x.

It's the same on the 3 DirecTV receivers that I've seen - H20, HR20 and D10 - and I'm guessing it's the same on all receivers using the common DirecTV GUI.

The size of the Live Window is apparently dependent upon the amount of space dedicated to the chosen function.

Perhaps I'm a bit anal too. I think that it makes the unit feel unpolished when I see this.

But I take comfort in the fact that I'm annoyed by a cosmetic problem, not a functional bug.

This has been there since day one and I agree that it ought to be dealt with. If anything, the picture-in-guide should get wider or narrower with SD or HD programming, but even that's not necessary.
