View Full Version : So, what's in your HT?
Cool, a new pair of forums. Guess I'll start by asking everybody what audio sources they have going to their HT receiver. Me:
Computer (RCA for now, plan on getting S/PDIF coax to TosLink converter so I can use S/PDIF)
DVD Player (TosLink)
VCR (RCA)
Satellite Receiver (TosLink)
TV tuner (RCA)
Video camera (RCA. obviously not always connected)

My UTV box and my Panny 5-dvd changer run to a Sony STR-DE835 via toslink and svideo. My pc has a Hercules gamesurround fortissimo II sound card that has toslink in/out, and one day I will get that cabled up.

Last month I moved into my new apartment home in Brunswick and the "Golden Isles of Georgia." Not yet willing to run cables all over the place, I have resorted to using X-10 (http://www.x10.com/products/x10_vk57a.htm) a/v senders to distribute baseline video and line-level audio to three TVs.
My two DPs are temporarily 'stacked' just inside the back patio door, along with an a/v switcher and one X-10 sender. All three TVs, living room, bathroom, and a small bathroom monitor/TV, have their own wireless a/v receiver. The audio connections are stereo.
Until I can figure out how to hardwire everything, which, in reality and in consideration of my haute' decor, may not be possible, I will continue to enjoy the convenience and flexibility of my magical X-10 devices.

The 3 vcrs were from the days before I got a 501 and high definition television (and HD recording capability). I haven't watched live television for a long time. Just before the PVRs came along, I'd record everything to tape so I could fast forward through the commercials. :)
The HTPC doesn't have 2 sounds cards. The hipix HD card has its own coax spdif out that is cleaner sounding than routing the sound through directsound to the sound card. The coax out from the sound card is used for all other HTPC audio including the DVD playback, etc.

I use an Proceed AVP with
1 Dish 6000 Digital - Svideo
2 JVC SVHS Analog - Svideo
1 Proceed CD player Digital
1 Pioneer LD/DVD combo player digital AC-3 and analog - Svideo (nice thing about the Proceed is that it checks for AC-3/PCM/Analog and selects the right one)
1 Harmon Kardon AM/FM tuner Analog
I am kinda waiting on what happens in HDTV land before upgrading the Proceed AVP to AVP2 with component video switching to see what happens in that whole area.

TV- RCA/SVideo
VCR - RCA/Svideo
DVD - Coax/Svideo
501 - Toslink/Svideo
CD Changer - RCA
Stereo (for tape deck) - RCA
Digital 8 - when connected, RCA/Svideo through my SVHS VCR. Stunning PQ!
Still have a set of digital coax in/outs open that will be used for a component CD Recorder unit and 6channel analog that will be used for DVD-A. Right now I have my DVD player also hooked up analog for 2.1 ch analog (My DVD Player has a separate analog sub output) for MP3s.
Hey Nick,
An earlier post of your's stated that you were using two x10 transmitters and 4 x10 receivers. I've looked on their site and there is not an option to buy a single receiver. Where did you get yours? Also, if the transmitter is set to A for example, will every receiver set to A pickup that signal. Thus, 1 transmitter to three receivers.
Thanks.

What?!?! No turntables?
My system consists of an AMC AV-81HT Pro-Logic decoder/preamp.
Power is through 2 AMC 2445 4x45 Watt power amplifiers bridged to 90W across the front and 45W ea. to the rears.
All above about to be replaced with a new receiver of some kind.

JVC D-VHS Dish receiver.

Kenwood KD-500 Turntable w/Infinity Black Widow tone arm and AKG X8E cartridge.
Dell Computer with about 1800 MP3's feeding through an X-10 "Big Picture" wireless audio/Computer transmitter/receiver wired into channel "000" on the JVC D-VHS.
Additional occasional sources include:
Tascam 42B Half Track Stereo reel to reel
Teac A3300SX quarter track reel to reel

Hi Tusk & welcome to DBSTalk :)
I have three sets, two stereo audio and one mono audio (older model designed for a security camera before the wireless cams came out. If you just need the rx only, give X-10's 800 number a call -- I'm sure they will sell you just the rx.
One tx on channel A will serve three (or more) wireless receivers set to ch A. I haven't tested above four, but I believe the number of receivers is theoretically unlimited.
I think the analogy of the w/l tx being a "mini" TV station is valid, where anyone within range can receive the broadcast. This also brings up the unlikely possibility of a nearby neighbor being able to receive your signal, or vice versa, so be careful and don't send any, ahem, 'secret stuff' over your wireless system. :D

That's a great set-up, Frank. I like the way your a/v gear blends into the background so it's hardly noticeable. :D

Like your preamp! I use a Marantz Model 3650 Preamp which is slowly fading. :( I need to get on ebay and find a "new" premp...
Richard King

Yea, I forgot to put the preamp in my source list. Rane is mostly known for their pro equipment and this preamp is probably most common in radio stations. It has both unbalanced RCA outputs and balanced screw terminal outputs, so it is very adaptable to different situations. I have the TT and preamp hooked up right now into my computer soundcard for transcribing some old records. Having the preamp is very handy for this kind of situation.

I was going to add a tape deck and turntable but I realized they would be useless as I have nothing remaining to play in them.

There are a whole bunch of computers, and audio and video equipment in the house, but much of it belongs to my parents or to my siblings, so since the original question was "what's in YOUR system".
I'll talk ONLY about what's in my bedroom that's mine.
I have a Sony KV-20V80 20" standard def tv with over 500 lines of horizontal resolution and an S-video input(which was very rare on a bedroom set when I got it in late summer 1998).
Sony DVP-NS315B DVD Player
Magnavox VR9360 4 Head Hi Fi VCR
Old Toshiba 4 head mono vcr
Echostar 3900 Satellite Reciever
Marantz RS 2252 Stereo Reciever
Jensen CJ-R Bookshelf Speakers
Sennheiser HD-477 Studio Monitor Headphones
The computer I have in my bedroom is a HP Pavilion 6535 with Windows 98 2nd edition, an Intel Celeron processor running at 466mhz, upgraded to 192 megs ram, and an HP Pavilion MX70 monitor.
The computer also has a wireless connection to the cable modem via our wireless broadband home network.
There's also ofcourse av furniture to house the audio and video equipment as well as furniture to house the computer equipment.
My bedroom isn't even the master bedroom, so after you add in a bed, a recliner, and a computer chair into the mix there isn't tons of room left over.
That's why I don't have a printer or a scanner hooked up to the computer in my bedroom, there simply isn't enough room so the 2nd scanner and the 2nd printer are in the basement collecting dust not hooked up to anything.
I used to have a Sony Webtv Plus and I loved that thing, and I sold it on ebay after my parents got another puter so I got their old one.
I REALLY REALLY miss the webtv plus :( even though I have a broadband puter now.
I'll attach a bunch of pics of the audio, video, and computer equipment.

The AMC equipment has been replaced with an HK AVR-7200 receiver (very nice). The Toshiba 35" television has been supplimented with an InFocus X-1 ceiling mounted video projector and an 80" screen. The Denon tuner is no longer needed since the HK has a tuner stage. The Revox died and has been replaced in my rack by the Teac 3300. The JVC D-VHS has been replaced by a Dish Network 508 DVR. The Teac VHS HiFi VCR has died and has not yet been replaced (although I am using the D-VHS as my vcr now). I have added a DVD recorder to a new computer for recording. The rest is about the same, although I haven't hooked in the signal processors yet.

Surround - Monitor Audio Studio 6
