We finally get one of the local newscasts in Cincinnati in HD. Not too bad considering the NBC national news just went HD a few months ago. I know that many other cities have had their news in HD, and I really don't watch the news all that much (usually on when I on the laptop on the internet), but it's great to see more and more HD content.
And holy crap, they just cut to an interview out of the studio on a local campus and it was in HD. I'm shocked because many of the out of studio interviews on the NBC aren't even HD.
Anyway, is your local news HD?

My 10 o'clock on Fox29 out of WPB is not. I really don't watch the others because they interfere with DS & CR. So I cannot tell you if they are. I can say that if Fox29 would fix their audio dropouts and video pixel troubles I would be happy enough.:)

Our Tampa ABC affiliate went HD for their local news a few weeks ago. First one locally to do so.

WTVF ch. 5 in Nashville (CBS affiliate) went HD with local news a few months ago. They're still the only one here.

Yeah Matt I just noticed that last night myself. Now if 12,9 and even FOX would follow suit. It's actually 9 (ABC) that is HD. Now we need 5 (NBC) and 12 (CBS).
Separately, it didn't have the HD marker, so who is responsible for that?

If you use the HD guide filter, does the box find it? That might separate the responsible party.
The ABC Station in Fresno (KFSN/ch.30) has aired there local news in HD since april

Our local Fox station [Fox8] in New Orleans has had their news in HD for several months now. The other alphabet networks [abcnbccbs] are still in the "SD" universe with no indication of HD in their future.

The HD broadcast that I saw here in the Cincy market was NBC lastnight during the evening news{it did have the HD marker}.I have not seen the local news yet in HD was that what you were reffering to ??

NBC's *national* news went HD a few months ago (I think at 6 pm). Cincinnati's local news on ABC (channel 9) went HD sometime recently. I just noticed it today at 5 and 5:30.

It went live yesterday on WCPO-DT. Most of the remotes are SD widescreen, so don't be fooled.

In Atlanta, WXIA 11 (NBC) was first in market in HD local news. WSB 2 (ABC) followed shortly after. WXIA produces a 10 PM newscast as well on WATL 36 (MNT) that is in HD. Not sure when WGCL 46 (CBS) or WAGA 5 (FOX) plan to go HD.

I've e-mailed the station. Not just about that, but I had contacted them 5 months ago and the person who responded said they had no timing as to when they would go HD, so he said he would look into, so we'll see if he actually does. It's not a huge deal, but if people don't know, they can't switch to watching it to increase the ratings so the other channels go HD faster :) I know we normally want the local news on NBC, but this will definitely make me watch the HD one over the SD one.

Not one local news channel (don't watch much either) in the Pittsburgh DMA is in HD, or pseudo HD with a SD widescreen.
I'd bet more than half of the talking-heads have a HDTV at home though.

I'm in Cincy, so I guess I'll start watching the local news on WCPO!Yeah! The more people that switch, the more likely the others will hurry up and do it. And I actually prefer the people on 9. My wife likes the people on 5, but that Todd Dykes (I think that's his name) really annoys me. And I can't stand the people on 12.

It is interesting that all of these Fox stations are HD, meanwhile here in NYC, Fox is the only station not in HD and instead are trying to woo me with "Sky Guardian", whatever the heck that is, good luck drawing me away from HD with that.

I sent e-mails to the four network affiliates here in Tulsa. The NBC station, KJRH-2, said they plan to go with an HD newscast by the end of 2008. Fox 23 (KOKI) says their newscast will be HD by 2009, but the way the reply was written it sounded like they were tying it to the digital conversion. KOTV 6, the CBS station said they have no plans to convert their news to HD and I haven't heard from the ABC affiliate, KTUL, yet.
Update: I just heard from KTUL. While they do not have any projected date set, they do have plans to convert their facility to HD. Roger Herring, the Director of Broadcast Operations, wrote There are not specific dates as of yet and the plans continue to be modified as the technology changes. As you may be aware the developments are taking place so quickly, that it is quite a challenge to keep up with the multitude of interfaces and compression schemes. The change to HD in the production facilities would affect all local programming from KTUL, including Good Day Tulsa. (Good Day Tulsa is a local interview show hosted by two long-time news anchors who get to let their hair down... it's a very enjoyable show!)

I wonder why KOTV 6 and KWTV 9 (sister stations) say they don't have plans. I mean they both have those brand new HD helicopters. They are outfitted with I think 3 HD cams. Why not use them? All this recent flood coverage would have been nice to see it in HD. Next time I am at my parents I will ask their neighbor KWTV pilot why. Maybe he will know.
Still waiting for any new upgrade to HD local news here in Albuquerque TV market. "45"
Any news on this?:)

My secondary market which I get ota, has WRAL 5 from Raliegh NC was the 1st station in the US to have a HD news cast, Oct 13, 2000.
The entire newscast is HD, all remote cameras, the stations helicopter, they have HD Viper radar.
They also do WRAZ FOX 50 news, WRAZ is owned by the same parent company.
May 9, 1996 WRAL was the first station to file with the FCC to get a digital license.
July 23, 1996 WRAL transmitted the 1st digital signal.
WRAL runs to full time channels,
WRAL-HD CBS 5.1
WRAL-NC NEWS CHANNEL 5.2
Also during the NCAA Basketball Tournament, the run 4 channels
WRAL 5.1
WRAL 5.2
WRAL 5.3
WRAL 5.4
Also on the local cable company, they air WRAL HD1 and HD2 a second HD
channel so the cable subs get 2 HD and 4 SD channels of games.
Up until about 2 years ago WRAL HD 5.1 ran all the CBS HD shows, and when HD programming was not available in HD they aired there own HD shows, the station was call then WRAL DIGITAL, I believe now they have to run the same exact feed as there analog channel.
WRAL is the leader in HD in the US.
1st to have a HD football game in the US, 1st to air a shuttle launch in HD also.

Mark, didn't you see the video from the KWTV chopper on the rescue by the OHP? I've seen it almost everywhere! However, you are forgetting that KOTV lost their helicopter back in may or June while shooting a promo. Even at that, the KOTV chopper was KWTV's old one... it did not have HD, but it did have a gyro-stabilized ball mounted camera.

They do a superb job of it too!
The only part of the FOX8 news that isn't at least in widescreen are the weather graphics. However, the meteorologist standing in front of the graphics is! He or she will overlap the "pillarbars" on the side of the weather graphics! :D
Occasional stock historical footage will be presented "pillarboxed".
As a general rule:
Stuff from the studio: 720p / 16x9.
Stuff shot in the field and edited in the studio: 720p / 16x9.
Stuff live in the field or uploaded to the studio from the satellite truck (due to time constraints): 480p / 16x9 (downrezed from the 720p camera master for transmission via the satellite truck's microwave link).

That's Scripps-Howard and they just converted Tampa and Cincy - they got the go ahead right before the NAB in April and went shopping.
Although Cincy is their Corporate Headquarters, I suspect that you saw a 16:9 480 line field operation as the S/H stations are not supposed to start receiving the HD Field Cameras until this Fall.
My Locals are wcco(cbs), kstp(abc), kare(nbc) and kmsp(fox) from MPLS/St.Paul, MN. Only KARE has news in HD. I can not understand why KSTP does not have it's news in HD after what Stanley Hubbard did to Pioneer the TV's birth!
-In June 1939, KSTP purchased one of the first TV cameras in the U.S.

I have no problem with them (Fox8) live on the newscast....
But....
Have you checked out their headshot photos on the web site?
Who's idea was it to hire a photographer who told each of his subjects, "OK, pretend you're extremely constipated and trying to squeeze one out", just before snapping their pic??!! Their headshot pics are horrible! Every one of them! The entire news crew looks far better in HD than in these web pics!

As Ronder mentioned, KARE in the Twin Cities area (NBC affiliate) has their 5:00, 6:00 and 10:00 news all in glorious HD. They actually went HD almost a year or so ago - it's been a long time. And one of the coolest things, I thought at the time, was that all the remote location stuff that they film themselves has been HD, too. Clips they get from news services, sports highlights, etc. are SD feeds, but their stuff is HD. Been loving that!
ABC Channel 9 and Channel 27 (Ind) here in Orlando have been doing HD news since last November. I believe they said they were the first in the county to have HD local news.
I just wish the rest of them would get it. I used to watch Fox 35 News every morning but not since they went to those annoying gray pillar bars, I can't stand to watch that station. The black pillar bars I can live with, but those gray ones are to annoying, and really look stupid when black horizontal ones come on. Black across the top and bottom and gray on the sides.
