Hi everyone,

Yesterday I talked my grandma into upgrading to an HR20 so she could get the new channels.

She has a DirecTV brand TiVo in her living room and a Phillips DirecTV TiVo in her bedroom. We're having the installer move to receiver from her living room to her bedroom and since she owns the Phillips box she said I could have it.

We've been subscribers here at my house for.. 11 or 12 years but we've only ever had DirecTV in our living room.

Does anyone know how much it would cost me to have an installer come out and run lines etc.. so I can run this Phillips box in my bedroom?

I can be more specific if needed. We've got an HR20 in the living room and an 5-LNB dish.

Installing the dish is free and it should be free to move the other receiver to the bedroom. If the installer tries to charge you tell him to install the HR20 in the bedroom which he will have to do for free and then swap the two receiver's after he leaves.

Service calls are usually $75 I think. If you will be using it as a new customer (ytour own account instead of leaching off grandma....just kidding) you should be able to get install and a new DVR (Non HD) for free. Take a look at this deal to see what I mean.

I don't think the part about Grandmother has any bearing on your question. I think your question is how much will Directv charge me for adding a 2 tuner TiVo to my existing account? I think the answer maybe to go to your account on line and chose upgrade your equipment then use the code DVR4U2 to get a free install of the leased R15 receiver.

They are going to charge her 75 dollars I did the exact thing BMORE said I had the HR20 put in the bedroom then I switched it. then it was free.

Thanks for your help everybody.

I finally got through to DirecTV support after trying off an on today. The CSR said they would charge me $70 for the installation and the fact that they didn't sell me the receiver would be fine.

What I was mostly worried about was all of the hardware they'd need. I wasn't sure if the $70 service call would include all the wiring and switches. It does.

Thanks again.

If I could piggy-back off of the question, I have structured wiring in my home and 4 jacks installed in different rooms. This install was done by the builder. What I won't to know is how much does DTV charge to add jacks in two other rooms. They will basically be running a cable from my Homebase in the basement to each of those rooms. I would hope they would be able to do it within the house and not up the side of the home from the outside. Anybody have this done b4?

Updated post- Just called DTV and they told me because I have the service package that I will be charged just $19.99 to get a new jack and a new HD receiver. Pretty sweet. U know I am on the phone right setting up the install.

Thank you so much for that code! I was about to add a R15 to my room and would've cost me $99. With this code, I am now able to relocate my D11 into my parent's room and now I get the DVR.

think again..a service call will not get any kind of install done...period. nor will it include any neccessary switches,,,you need to call dtv back and ask for a dvr install , and make sure the service call is canceled,

a service call is a "special request" work order that restores service
an install work order is completely different and includes installation of recvr and switches if needed
an upgrade or install and equipment work order includes the recvr and install of the recvr and any needed switches. i'm sure the installers that post here will concur with me,,,the problem is that most csr's (even tech csrs) do not understand this at all...

Thanks for clearing that up... I was prepared to post exactly the same thing.

Also, calling the CSR gives you another chance to get it all done for free... good luck.

The install you were quoted covers mounting the dish on the house and grounding it, running cables on the exterior of your home, and drilling and running the cable through the exterior wall closest to your receiver. Anything else is custom work and is not included. Your best bet is to ask the tech to look at exactly what you are wanting and have him give you a quote up front for any additional charges.

Just wanted to be sure on this, you mean outside on the wall and not inside it right?

Yes - around the outside/exterior of the house.

Correct. Drilling the hole straight through the wall from the outside of the house to the inside, then running the cable through it.

Would D* give you the option of having the install tech's run the lines inside the wall for an extra fee of course? Or would that job need to be handled by an outside company?

No. D* has a set rate that they pay the install companies for the work. The install company then pays the tech a set rate. Any extra fee for custom work (work not paid for by D*) is set by the tech. Some install companies limit the price that the tech can charge for different types of custom work, but some don't.
