View Full Version : 5 lnb installation question

This may sound like a dumb question but here it goes:
Is there any reason (besides site line) that the new 5 lnb dish cannot be installed on a roof. I recently had an installer come out (wife was the only one home) and he told her that the satellite was too heavy to be installed on the roof. He wanted to put the dish, next to the mailbox, in the front yard.
My wife told him that was unacceptable and canceled the order.
I know this dish weighs 50 lbs or so but surely it can be installed on a houses roof, correct?
Before I call and reschedule I need someone to tell me that I am not crazy and that the 5 lnb dish would have no problem being installed on the roof.
Thanks
Windload would be the main concern, if its done right with both of the monopoles you should be good. But it depends on the construction of the roof. Call D* back and talk to them about what the installer said.

As Ken said, if done right it should be OK. There have been some posts about some installers not wanting to do roof installs for various reasons. I don't really know how true that is.
I believe it ways 32lbs. It does need to be bolted to the roof truss framing and not just the plywood. Monopoles should be used as well as a rubber membrane pad for the base plate. Is it the standard asphalt roof.
Good luck. Let us know how it turns out.

Most of the excuses have been due to leaks that might come in the roof.
Many, many 5 LNB dishes have been mounted on roofs [even when not wanted to be there].

I could have a problem like this on my hands as well, for my fathers potential new installation. He had DirecTV back when it was first released 1994 or 1995, somewhere along then.
He has a 2 story house. The installer then mounted the original satellite on the chimney. My dad told me he was thinking about getting DirecTV again. I told him he would need a new dish, he then asked me if I thought he could use the one he had already installed since he never took it down or disconnected anything. Of course he will need the new 5 LNB dish and the second smaller dish for local channels.
He is concerned just like you are, will they be able to put a new dish on the chimney or somewhere on the roof? I personally have no clue, but I know my dad, he want get DirecTV if it cant be installed neatly on the roof in the same place it has been for 15 years...
Good luck. I would definently call DirecTV and see what they say.
Mine is mounted in the roof. It works fine and I am pleased, my wife would never agree to a installation close by the mail box...

I would only be worried about a very weak roof. If your roof is in good shape, I see no reason you couldn't put a dish there.

Yes it is a normal asphalt roof. It is a ranch home built in 1987. Do most installers bring those "monopoles" that you discussed?
Thanks for the replies, it is much appreciated.

I wouldn't say all of them honestly, but most should. The best thing to do os call D* and have them put it on the notes of your order. Then ask for the number to the install coampany (D* will give it to you) and tell them you need the monopoles.
You may want to get them yourselves for solidsignal.com then ask D* for credits. You really should not have to do that, but......

I agree the monopoles should be installed. But they don't come with the dish. At least there haven't been any in the last 10 or so I have installed.

Mine is on our roof. The dish is larger than the LNB3 dish and it's a bit heavier too. However, as others have mentioned, it should b installed with a couple monopoles that stabilize it . If it's done correctly, you should have no issue with a roof install.

would there be any difference in weight/size with the slimline version of the 5LNB dish? we have a few of those in our neighborhood. Some mounted on roofs some not.
I currently have a 3LNB dish, and am looking at the Slimline 5LNB (a lot cheaper)
Would that help candler8's 'problem' as well?
And candler8 - your installer obviously was not married...no man with a wife, in his right mind, would recommend to have a dish put out by the mailbox for all the world to see...

I'm going to install the 5 LNB slimline on my patio roof. Would I have to use these monopoles?
Mine is installed on the roof, with monopoles.

Yes there is a difference. The Slimline weighs 32lbs. Quite a bit heavier than the 3-LNB. It also has more surface.

If your patio roof is your standard run of the mill roof like your house you should be able too. Yes...you should use the monopoles. Whay type of roof is the patio?

Mine is nicely wall side mounted, but the dish, mount, mast were all engineered for mounting almost anywhere one can get solid framing wood underneath.
As mentioned, have the installer use the two monopoles as required by DIRECTV.
The only caveat is what roofing material do you have? Most of the shingle technologies are fine, but the clay and cement tiles require a better than average installer. (But still can be done.) :)
Cheers,
Tom

Mine is mounted on a sloping two story roof with monopoles, have had no problem with wind or the roof.
