View Full Version : USB hub, External drive and/or PocketDish
I have a 622 and a Pocket Dish. I'm thinking about buying an external USB fan for additional cooling, but don't want to occupy the rear USB port, which I plan to use for an external HD.
I also have a PocketDish, but I can always hook that up to the front USB port if I want to transfer programming.
Has anybody used an external HD through a USB hub?
Here's an image of the external cooling fan.

Yes, I do, and I also use that exact same fan on both 622's.
On the Tech Chat they said USB hubs were not supported. I thought I had seen a post where someone had tried one and got the "unsupported USB device" error message. I have not tried on myself since I thought it did not work.
I was the one that posted about the "unsupported USB device" error message. I tried several and could not get the 622 to use any of them.
I do use the same USB fan that is posted here and what I do is use a powered USB hub (NOT plugged into the 622) and right now it is running two USB fans. A lot of USB hubs have a power jack and all your need is a 6 volt D.C. "wall wart" (make sure that the center connector is +) and is rated at 300 ma or more (if you want to run more than one fan).

Bill,
I have one of those small laptop-type hubs I'm using. No ex power supply, it just has one USB/male that I have connected to the rear, and the fan and EHDD connected to 2 of the 4 female ports on the hub. It's the only one I ever tried. The EHDD is powered by its own A/C, but the fan must be getting its power from the receiver...dunno, they both work fine. I'll pull it out, and get the brand, if you like, lmk.

It's a Thermaltake A1888. You'll find them all over the net, $9-$15 + shipping.
The work great, and with the variable speed set on low, they silently cool the receiver. I have mine placed in the L/R corner, aimed at the rear and side vents of the receivers.

Do you all feel the fan is necessary? My 622 does not seem to run all that hot.

Ken,
Thanks. Yes, just for reference I would like to know what brand it is. Right now I am using a USB switch since DISH only supports one EHDD at a time but in the future (when and if DISH supports it) I would like to use a USB hub so I don't have to manually select a drive.

Generally speaking, if the receiver is out in the open, with adequate venting to its sides and rear, it should be fine.
There have been some reports of suspected overheating when the receiver is enclosed in an entertainment center.
Personally, I have mine on a single open glass shelf. The 722 is on top of a 622, with a DVD R/W next to them, and 2 EHDD's in-between. I use the fan to keep all the components cooler.
You can check the HDD temperature of your receiver on the Counters page:
Menu >6 >3 Counters >PgUp/PgDn. You will find other threads hear to compare your reading with.:)

On the Tech Chat they said USB hubs were not supported....
This was stated in the context of not supporting multiple USB drives simultaneously attached.
