View Full Version : Media Share - Photo proportion issue

I don't really use Media Share that often, just as a novelty, but this has been bugging me. I don't have a problem with the resolution/quality of the picture being displayed. Rather I have a problem with the pictures appearing to be squeezed horizontally and/or stretched vertically.

My basic setup - wmp11 on windows xp pro sp2; hr20 native-off & 1080i/stretch, tv's Sony Bravia KDL-V32XBR1 or KDL-V26XBR1

Now the photos I'm viewing include 2592 x 1944 pixel images. Yet when I view these on my tv's, those oriented in landscape mode appear squeezed and are square instead of rectangularish and those oriented in portrait mode appear stretched out (long and thin). Either way, the image spans the entire vertical viewing area of the screen, it doesn't fill or properly stretch horizontally - the proportions should leave black space to the right and left, just not as much as is being displayed.

Any thoughts?

Do you have your TV set to stretch, just, or something like that? That would be my first thought.

If you use smaller images does the problem go away?

I have the same issue. Scanned 35mm negitives and slides don't seem to have the display ratio that I would expect. The worst are pictures taken with a digital in "normal" mode. Next are digital pictures taken in 3:2 mode. Then the 35mm pictures. The best pictures that fill the entire screen are those taken in 16:9 mode (some new digital camera have this mode). Unfortunately, 16:9 pictures are taken at HD resolution but still don't display at HD resolution using Media Share.

The TV is probably set to stretch for 4:3/480 content, but that would stretch things horizontally so that the image would fill the screen from left to right. My images fill the screen top to bottom, but they aren't displayed with proper horizontal proportions.

I'm going to play with this some more when I get home, maybe try native mode to see if anything happens. Just hadn't thought about it as the pictures aren't that bad, just enough out of proportion to make people look a bit taller and slimmer, a case of TV taking pounds off. :)

With smaller images (and I mean really smaller images) I'm pretty sure they display centered and in proportion. The problem I think is with larger images that are able to fill the screen vertically.

I know this doesn't help you, but I had so many issues with the photo quality via the HR20 that I stopped using it. Aspect ratio and resolution were very poor. I have a PS3 hooked up to the same systems now and the photo handling is super. It's really well done - usable, snappy, etc. Even the controller is a pleasure to use. It can rotate, zoom, etc very quickly. If DTV wants to ever release the photo sharing officially they really should jettison the current photo support and do it right.

I second the excellent results using the PS3. My son's PS3 displays pictures they way they should be displayed and not the way the HR20 does. (I understand that the HR20 support is Beta).

I had the same set of issues and after a lot of digging found the following thread that had a good explanation of why the issue exists (unfortunately it looks like it won't be addressed quickly...)

I was very excited when I got my HR21 to display my photos from the PC on the big screen TV, but my excitement soon faded once I realized that they were distorted and not the crisp HD photos I was expecting.

Seems like they have done most of the work getting the devices linked and the photos to display. How hard is it to get them to display in full HD quality?

Any new info on when or if this issue might be fixed?
