I have some stupid questions here. I tried to find my answer, but got overwhelmed and confused :).

I have an HD DVR, an HD TV, and a 3 lnb oval dish (and the Broadband converter thingsm which I may not need just yet as far as I understand).

However, I do not have the HD package yet. Are there any channels to tune to or that should be available to show if I am capable of getting HD channels?

I was going to add it today, even to just try it out for a month, but I wasn't sure and didn't want to waste $10.

Thanks for bearing with me! :)

You need to have your dish upgraded from a 3 LNB dish to a 5 LNB dish. That is a free upgrade. If you have a multi-switch you need to have that upgraded to a Zinwell WB68 to receive the new MPEG4 HD channels starting next month and that is also a free upgrade. You will also need to connect the BBC's to receive the new channels.

You will be able to receive the MPEG2 HD channels that are available right now if you add the HD package to your account.

If MPEG4 HD locals are available in your area you will need the 5 LNB dish for them also.

BMoreRavens is exactly right.

Just to add...

The MPEG2 HD channels you could get with the equipment you have now include...
ESPN
ESPN2
HDNet
HDNet Movies
Discovery HD Theater
Universal HD
intermittant sports coverage of NFL Network and local RSNs

If you spend $10 today, you will get all the HD channels that are up and you are eligible for. (You have to buy HBO to get the HBO HD channel, for instance.)

At the very least you should get
72 ESPN2
73 ESPN
74 UHD
75 TNT
76 Discovery HD Theater
78 HD Net Movies
79 HD Net

98 National Geographic Channel Sneak Peek (Times vary)
332 MHD Sneek Peek (Times vary)

99 HD Pay-Per-View

Within a very short time (probably quicker than you can get the upgrade installed), if you had the upgrade, you would get a whole slew of new HD channels. We don't know which channels are launching when, but there will be at least 70 by end of the year plus part-time sports channels.

Hurry and get it. You have the big investment already in HDTV and HD DVR, maximize the beauty they can bring! :)

Cheers,
Tom

And the question is not a dumb question at all. A small bit of education needed on the possibilities is all. Someday I may need to ask a question you know the answer to. :)

Cheers,
Tom

Thanks very much guys! I wish I could get answers to questions I have about anything as quick as I get them here.

Love the site and I get an education just by standing on the sidelines.

Thanks again! :)

Is your HD DVR the HR20? If it's the old DirecTIVO, HR10, you're not going to get the new mpeg-4 channels. If it's the HR20, then you'll be good for the new stuff with a dish upgrade.
