View Full Version : Networking Issue - Stumped
I'm at a loss and I'm hoping someone can help.
I'm using a Linksys WRT54GX2 as a wireless router. Latest firmware. WEP 128-bit encryption, MAC filtering. IP is 192.168.1.1 Setup as DHCP server.
I've added the Buffalo WLI-TX4-G54HP Ethernet bridge to provide access to my HR20 to prep for VOD. Should be simple. But no....
I configed the Buffalo no problem. I can ping it at the static IP I gave it 192.168.1.115 I can run the setup utility from my PC no problem. The WEP key is configured correctly and the MAC address is added to my Linksys router.
The Buffalo works fine when I plug in my PS3. I get Internet access with no problem and the green light is on next to the CAT5 cable.
I plug the same CAT5 cable into the HR20 and no green light. No biggie I thought, just need to config. Of course I thought the HR20 should configure itself using DHCP, but...
Well, the auto config does not work. Wrong IP address range, wrong subnet. So I go into Advanced Config and use the following settings:
IP 192.168.1.116
Subnet: 255.255.255.0
Default Gateway: 192.168.1.1
DNS: 192.168.1.1
All of these test fine, but network and internet do not. No green light on the Ethernet port of the Buffalo. Same port as the PS3 used successfully.
I've tried changing the default gateway to the Buffalo at 192.168.1.115. Tried changing the DNS to the DNS of my ISP as reported by router 207.5.171.1. Tried different combos - no joy.
I'm about ready to throw this box out the window. I know the Buffalo is working as it worked with the PS3 and I can run the web config and ping it at 192.168.1.115. No successful ping from 192.168.1.116 No green light on Buffalo ethernet port.
Is there something I need to do to activate the LAN port on the HR20? I tried a restart with no change. How can the IP, subnet, gateway, dns test OK with no green light.
I need a green light! Anyone using the Buffalo ethernet converter have any ideas or can share their settings?

Two things...what model HR20 do you have? If it's a 100 then there are two ethernet ports and only one is active (at least that is my understanding).
The other thing is the firmware on the Buffalo...if you do not have V2.53 then you are likely to run into problems with the HR20 (even if other devices work).

Tried that, same issues.

I have the HR20-700 so only one port.
I have firmware v2.50. You have a PM.
What are your settings?

Can a mod combine these threads? I am seeing double.

Let me give a shout out to Bluemoon! I've been pulling my hair out all weekend trying to get media sharing to work. As soon as I upgraded the firmware to V2.53 (thanks again to Bluemoon), the WMP11 icon popped up saying it found that elusive unknown device. I now have photos and music going through my wireless home network to the HR20. :D

I second the cheers for bluemoon737. He saved me after 8-10 wasted hours. 10 minmutes after the firmware update I was in business.

A note from your friendly moderator, to all who read this thread:
The Buffalo firmware that was pulled from their site, was pulled for a reason. Please do not post offers to e-mail that firmware to people, as it will be considered "hacking talk" and is against forum rules.

Buffalo is aware of the need. Perhaps if enough potential customers let them know they want to see version 2.53 made available again, they will get the message.
Edit: The source code is licensed under the GPL http://www.gnu.org/licenses/gpl.html and available for download from Buffalo, so maybe hacking (in the sense that Stuart referred to) is a moot point. Their site makes it clear that if you upload unsupported code (hacking in the other, entirely legal, sense) the warantee is void, which is to be expected.

Do we know what the reason was? For those of us who may have already updated the firmware, are there any issues or reason to be worried?

I have the same setup but my HR20-700 connected to the internet without a hitch. However, I've just about given up on sharing music and photos, so good luck.
