I've heard that it is customary for Dish to release the locals the evening before they actually said they would. As of 5:15pm tonight, Dish says no, at least for Des Moines. Anyone have any luck getting these turned on?

Maybe there will be an agreement with ABC affiliate WOI-TV in Des Moines by a certain deadline tonight or tomorrow start of business and they will role the entire market out tomorrow?

I'm watching Jerry Springer on ch29 right now :) My mom ordered the locals from work around lunch time. PQ is fair. Some pixelation on black backgrounds and on Dr. Phil's sport coat. But the important thing is now I can get the free dish and switch for 61.5. :)

Yes- the Des Moines stations are on now, also void of ABC and WB.

Our second dish will be installed on Dec 1 from between 8AM-noon. I flipped around between the local newscasts, during every commercial break there was some kind of ad for Dish. None mentioning locals are now available, but it was the first time I ever saw a Dish ad on tv sans the ones E* inserts on national channels.

One of the commercials for a local retailer was really dumb. A guy dressed up as a cow saying "Moooooooove to Dish Network and drop cable for as little as $22.99. Another one was a generic commercial, and at the end it was just like the D* ads, with logos national retailers. Real *long* list, Sears and RatShack. Guess they forgot about WalMart and the various wholesale clubs.

When you call WOI-TV in Des Moines (the ABC affiliate in retrans dispute), they don't ask for your name when you call the programming department. So, I have called the programming manager there yesterday and today to inquire about WOI not appearing on the Dish line-up. Yesterday I was told that is was "imminent" that WOI would be added. Today I was told "soon, but probably 3 months." Somehow "soon" and "probably 3 months" don't seem to belong in the same sentence in my opinion. WOI is the least popular station in terms of viewers (at least for the newcasts). You'd think they would be the ones trying hard to be viewed by more viewers.

Can these retrans disputes really last 3 months?

DirecTV and KOIN were at it for over a year.

DirecTV could not add KOIN (a Portland CBS station) until they had an agreement.

Meanwhile, Comcast and WPVI(the Philly ABC) didnt have an agreement for over a year but since Comcast IS the dominating cable company, not much Disney could do. 1) Lose all your cable viewers or 2) Stay on cable but no retransmission money going to the station. 1) would be very dumb and bad PR for the local TV station.

An agreement was settled upon. Comcast STILL does not offer Disney Channel in basic service in most regions. Disney I think gave up trying to make Disney Channel be available in as many cable homes in the "basic" service as competing Nick and Cartoon Network. Disney refocused their strategy and purchased Fox Family, now ABC Family.

I live in Des Moines also. I spoke with WOI personnel this week. They said the DISH agreement WILL go through and probably within the next few months. It's always about the money. I agree that WOI is the lowest station on the totem pole, and I would be begging to get my station on the satellite. Now if they could just get their sh*t together and get their 59.1 HD station on the air.

Why is DISH Network not trying to add the WB (KPWB) network to the Des Moines market? I thought that when a satellite company carried a local market, they were required to carry ALL the networks in that DMA?

KPWB is owned by Pappas broadcasting. Pappas and Dish have a long history of disagreeing over retransmission concent.

As to Must Carry, Dish is required to carry all the stations that ASK to be carried, but there are conditions. see http://ekb.dbstalk.com/19#MC (the bottom of the chart where you had me make a correction. :)

If you persue must carry for your station, you cannot demand compensation. If you want compensation, you cannot demand must carry. The big4 nets usually want the money, as a local package without one of the major nets would draw less customers, the providers pay up.

KPWB must feel like they are owed money for the carrage of thier hundreds of hours of quality WB programming.

Perhaps what low Nielsons will do to you. Cause you to want a big slice of the pie created by the Major Networks. :)

I dont understand why the local networks should get a dime anyway?! Their signal is FREE OTA already, which is why I have to suffer through 5 minutes of commercials every 10 minutes. Now they want to double dip and get subscription fees too? Both of these stations are weak as it is compared to KCCI and WHO. It serves them right if DISH never carries them, and people stop watching their shows. Goodbye local commercial advertising revenues. DISH could charge a third of what they do for locals $2 instead of $6 if it didnt have to pay off these yokels that want another Porsche for their garage collection. It's corporate greed at its worst, and WOI & KPWB are money whores because of it.

Last night I e-mailed WNGS UPN 67 abot carriage on DBS and this was their reply.

We want to be on DirectTV and Dish Network, but DirectTV doesn't want to cary us, and Dish Network can't recieve our signal. I can't give you an estimated time on when we will be on. sorry

I must say they have a great staff, I sent the e-mail in at 10:04 and they replied at 10:11.

Translation:

D* doesn't want to carry us because they want a fiber line to the POP although it is easily receivable with an antenna, we are awaiting an FCC decision to force carriage.

E* hasn't tried to pick us up with a normal antenna and conducted signal level tests with rabbit ears. We will have to fight through the FCC.

We will eventually be up on both providers, but you will have to wait 75 days after the FCC tells the providers to carry us.
