View Full Version : Vista/HP/Linksys/Buffalo/HR20 hiding!

Well....I had a feeling it would come to this.:( :scratchin

Background: Previously had one HR20-100 wired to my linksys router, but have never been able to see the HR20 on my network. It has passed the connectivity tests, yet I did not spend the time to get media share (WMP11) to work. The reason I thought it would come it this is because when I originally created my home network, I could never "see" my desktop in my network (from the Vista HP Pavillion), but the Vista laptop would appear if I viewed my network from the XP desktop. All would connect to the internet, and at the time, I was not as concerned with sharing files.

So......I decided to add to my frustration, and connect a 2nd HR20-100 to the system and a Buffalo ethernet converter WLITX4-G54HP .

Equipment: HP Pavillion 9205, Linksys WRT-54GS, Buffalo Technology WLITX4-G54HP, (1) HR20-100.

I could go through the steps of what I did to set it up, but I do not want to overlook anything, and looking for any help possible.
Setup:
Modem---->Linksys--->
(wired to Linksys port) HR20-100
(wireless) Laptop
(wireless) Ethernet Bridge---->HR200-100

Both HR20s when going through the menu setup connected to the network and internet. During the setup of the ethernet bridge, I could access the configuration page (IP 1.1.1.1) while it was wired to the Linksys, but once wireless....I cannot access the ethernet bridge.

Linksys/Laptop IP - 192.168.1.1
HR20-100 (wireless) IP - 192.168.1.101

THings I have not done (on purpose anyways)-
DHCP is enabled
No static IP setup
Updated Ethernet bridge firmware to v2.53 (I have a copy)

I went through the WMP11 network tips & tricks, somewhat knowing it would not help until I could get the HR20 visible on my network

Things I have done (not much)
Downloaded Vista compatible ethernet bridge converter manager
Setup ethernet bridge (What is the converter manager supposed to show?- I completed a profile setup, but it looks like the router info)
Setup WPA-TKIP security
Enabled sharing of network and files/folders.
It is a private network which allows "discovery" of the computer

I'd appreciate it any suggestions, comments, or questions around my problem. I am a novice, and fumble my way through networking. (I do get better once I use it enough:grin: )

So.....can anyone help me find my new HR20-100? I'll have more questions once I get to that point.

MikeR,

Are you positive that you are not using a static IP? Did you go into the 'Advanced Setup' menu under networking? I'm pretty sure that once you go into Advanced Setup, and certainly if you press 'Connect Now' in that menu that the HR20 gets set to Static. While not necessarily intuitive, you have to hit 'restore defaults' at that point to get it back to DHCP.

I did go under Advanced Setup for the HR20, didn't think about that one last night!:bang

Will that be the solution?

Just go back into Advanced setup and then choose restore defaults. That should get you back to DHCP.

I've restored defaults with no success. It changes the HR20 IP address to 192.158.1.100. If I open the Buffalo Clent Manager it shows an IP address of 192.168.1.101.

Next - upload the V2.53 software
Later tonight directly connect the adapter to the router again, to verify configuration.
Anybody with suggestions?

I still do not see the adapter in my network as a device, but the HR20 passes the internet test.

Not to confuse the situation further....but maybe this is part of my problem (from vestaviaScott) (http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?t=96383)

* Now you can enable Encryption if you would like. Enable the Encryption
on the access point first, then the router. If you do the router first you
will not be able to communicate with the Access Point, and it will be
orphaned. WEP is the only compatible form of security when using WDS.

Have you created permissions to share "my photos", "my music" and "my videos"?

I had the same problem and as soon as I change the folders to "shared" WMP11 on XP pro could "see" the HR20.

Not 100% sure as

1. I have enabled sharing in network properties (network sharing photo); but...when I look for shared files and folders (shared photo) - I have none.

You need to make sure that (1) your devices have permission to use media share and (2) that there is content included in the media share:

First thing is go to open Windows Media Player 11 and Click on Library -> Media Sharing You should have something similar to the following (I have two HR20s):
http://www.dbstalk.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=9895&stc=1&d=1189084651

Once you see your device on the list, all you need to do is click on Library -> Add to Library and make sure you choose appropriate folders for your music files

You also need to go to the individual folders and enable sharing. The default is to "not share" the folder. In XP they are found in the "my documents" folder.

- right click the folder
- select "properties"
- open the "sharing" tab
- click "share this folder"
- click "apply"

Repeat for all three folders (my pictures, my videos, my music).

I did not complete this one above. (believe I was getting frustrated the other night when looking at the HR20 Networking Tips that outline the procedure)

Didn't do that either.

Thanks Steve & Doug! This is it. I believe these are the two pieces that I was missing. I noticed when I opened WMP11 that an "unknown device" would show up in my network, but didn't know what it represented...

I'll verify tonight (after everyone goes to bed), and maybe I can organize this later for a step by step procedure. I like the image format used by Doug.

Another side question...last night I went to update the firmware, and I could not access the Buffalo ethernet adapter config page (adapter moved & temporarily hooked up to the router) with the 1.1.1.1 address (temporarily setting the laptop IP to 1.1.1.2). What do I need to do?

Another question:

Why does my HR20 not show up under networked devices?

It passes the internet/network test, and I get the nice green lights on the Buffalo.

Is it because I enabled security on the ethernet adapter before operating wireless?

Right now I'm running blind.

No, it is because the device is not a broadcasting device. It will not advertise on the network. That is the way D* wanted to present it. Don't worry about not being able to see it. You cannot ping it either. If you search for posts by me and use a keyword of "telnet" you will find some hints on how you can verify the connection of the HR20.

No, it is because the device is not a broadcasting device.
Thank you Spanky! I'll check the telnet info
Whew...I was getting overly complex with this then. Setting up the internet/network is easy then. Not being able to ping it makes it tough though when troubleshooting and setup.

Back onto my original path of getting WMP11 to share files. I'll update to v2.53 first.

With the assistance from the great group at this forum....I am now NETWORKED, Media viewing, & listening to "my music" on the HR20!

Keys to success: follow the instructions that are available in the various threads, particularly Earl's & Milominderbinder2's threads/info, and no matter how many times I read it (and ignored it) - upgrade to v2.53.

Once I started over with the config, fully enabled WMP11 sharing, upgraded to v2.53, the "Music&Photos" tab appeared. Then it was just a matter of adding the files as described below.

Thank you Steve & Doug and all that contribute to this forum!

Edit: btw, this particular setup is rather easy with the instructions available....as long as you are patient & don't get sidetracked with phantom issues......you get IP and MAC addresses on the brain!
