I remember seeing this on here before but I cant remember where....

Arent the LA area and NYC area HD locals broadcast in MPEG-2 not MPEG-4? I know with the new D11 and soon D10 sats they will be switching them over I would assume.

81, 83, 87 & 89 are the CONUS MPEG2 feeds.

2, 4, 5, 7 & 11 are MPEG4 Spot Beams. In the guide, if you do not have an antenna hooked up, you will see the following:

2 KCBS
2 LA2

2 KCBS is the MPEG4 HD Spot Beam
2 LA2 is the MPEG2 SD Spot Beam

81 is the MPEG2 HD CONUS.

So we actually get all 3 versions of 2, 4, 7 & 11; MPEG2 SD, MPEG2 HD & MPEG4 HD.
KTLA 5 (CW) is only MPEG2 SD & MPEG4 HD. There is not an MPEG2 CONUS feed.

Are you SURE the SD DNS feeds (81, 83, 87, 89) & the SD local feeds (2, 4, 7, 11) are NOT one & the same? It was always my understanding that they have ALWAYS been the same & that these are just NOT on the LA spot beam, as there is really NO need for them taking up room on the LA spot?

It's the same way in NY as well...

81, 83, 87, 89 are not SD DNS feeds they are MPEG 2 HD DNS feeds.

We get two sets of 2, 4, 5, 7, 11 next to each other in the guide...

The SD set are LA2, LA4, LA5, LA7, LA11

2 LA2
4 LA4
5 LA5
7 LA7
11 LA11

The HD set are MPEG4 off Sat 103(a)

2 KCBS
4 KNBC
5 KTLA
7 KABC
11 KTTV

The MPEG2 HD in the 80s, and the MPEG4 HD are not the same signal and come off different satellites.

OK, lack of knowledge here. I am in central California but receive (2) Los Angeles HD channels (87 & 89). Are we saying soon I won't be able to get these HD channels on my HR20?

You have the HR20 so you'll still see them even when they transition current MPEG2 HD to MPEG4 sometime next year.

For you guys in the L.A. area... is your Fox 10:00PM news also in SD? Do they just not broadcast in HD yet or what?

Not yet. They are the only one not in HD now. ABC7 started it, then CBS2 and KCAL9, then KTLA5 and finally NBC4. KTTV11 and Fox in general have not been moving rapidly toward an HD lineup. Maybe when Fox News Channel goes HD they will upgrade.

You are correct!

But I get KCAL (and KCOP) in HD just fine over OTA. And hopefully they will add it when they have more capacity. We should be happy we actually have 5 channels in HD over sat. Most DMA's have 4. Or less.

That is REALLY lame... especially since I watch Fox shows constantly, and all their best shows (Prison Break, 24, House) are already in HD.

You'd think they'd get on the ball with the HD newscast!!

KTLA channel 5 and KCAL channel 9 are NOT in HD over the dish itself... you have to buy an antenna and set up your OTA's to receive the digital feed for these channels.

KCAL 9 is great if you're a Dodger fan, or if you like watching the KCAL 9 news with Jackie Johnson in HD. :D

KTLA 5 was good for watching Raiders preseason games in HD, but otherwise that channel is pretty worthless.

You are correct about KCAL 9, but KTLA is in HD off the dish. I have KTLA(HD), LA5(SD) and 5-1(HD OTA).

Fox11 has American Idol in HD, that's their cash cow. Everything else is secondary.

The weird thing is that I didn't get an HD feed from KTLA when I just had the dish. Once I installed my OTA antenna, then I got an HD feed from Channel 5 AND from Channel 5-1.

I have no explanation for that.
