Apple is offering a $100 credit for use in Apple Retail and Apple Online stores to those who bought the iPhone prior to the 14 day return period. Those that bought the phone within the last 14 days, can get the full $200 refunded. Details of the $100 credit will be released next week.

Let's make a guess. They were on their way to selling a million of these things at $700 apiece -- that's 700 million dollars.

How much does it cost to make one of these things in China and ship it here? Perhaps $50 -- that's 50 million dollars.

So that's 650 million dollars profit on the hardware alone.

Now consider the two billion dollars those million subscribers will pay ATT for their two year service agreements!

Paying a premium is the cost of waiting all night in line to be the first kid on your block to have one of these things.

No sh!t. I remember them dancing and singing their way into the Apple/AT&T Stores that Friday afternoon in late June led by the Apple employees, who applauded them as they entered. They felt real good about themselves then, but now they have an issue about it. Early adopters aren't allowed to whine.

I would understand after maybe 6 months but 60 days is over the top.

I though that the people paying $700 for this thing were crazy, apperently so did Steve Jobs.

What is unbelivable is that, in a site dedicated to support iPhone users, about 20% of the people responding to a poll said that they would still ran and buy the iPhone at $700 when it first came out even if they knew that it was going to be reduced 33% in 60 days. :icon_stup

Well, I should say I told you so... but when I said that the Mac-heads all said Oh no, these will be in serious backorder blah blah.

Early adopters must suffer the wrath of lower prices for technology and having it first. Just consider it added to your monthly cell phone bill. and shut up about it.

But here's the real deal. I think they had such a party selling these so fast and furious that when the early Mac heads dried up in a couple weeks, there were huge quantities of them sitting on shelves, not selling. The reasons they weren't is a simple list.
It was over priced
It failed to be what it claimed
It had awful power choices
It was tied to the slowest network in the country
It was stuck on apple only apps built in and had huge restrictions on web surfing.

Consequently, after the customers permanently in an Apple coma dried up, the thinkers went in and said You've got to be kidding...
Thus the sales fell off the cliff in August after a million in July and Apple did the only thing they could and that was to drop the price.

Now that they did this $200 drop, the next step will be another drop before Christmas. Want it to happen sooner? Just hold off. It will. Apple has an abundant inventory with more on the way. They did this now because they are in a panic state. The iphone may be the biggest marketing flip-flop in history.

I have a video projector (Optoma HD7100) hanging from my livingroom ceiling that I paid $3000 for. I am on my 4th unit and haven't had one that works correctly yet. I received my first unit just over 1 year ago. Optoma upgraded me from the HD7100 to the HD7300 on the last exchange. Still not working right. The projector that I paid $3000 for can now be had for $1295. The projector that I have now (HD7300) can be had for $1495. Ah, the cost of being an early adopter. With all the problems that I have had I would say the projector is CERTAINLY worth the $1295 or $1495, but not the $3000 that I paid for it.
