View Full Version : Why does guide look worse in HD?

I have my receiver set to native output. To me, the guide looks significantly sharper when I am tuned to a SD station at 480i. When I pull up the guide when tuned to a HD station - much fuzzier. Why would this be the case? Are they using some crappy scaling algorithm for the guide only?

As a comparison, looking at the SD stations themselves - comparing between letting my TV or HR20 doing the scaling (neither that great) - looks about the same. Letting my external video processor do the scaling is a different story.

I've seen the same thing...

Do you have more than just 480i selected in your display settings on the HR-20? You might want to check to make sure you have 720p and 1080i selected as supported resolutions and see if that helps. Also check the supported resolutions for your TV.

If native is on, the guide is being internally scaled by your DVR to 1080 or 720. I actually find the guide a touch too sharp at 480i on my TV.

The HR20 smooths the fonts when it's outputting HD. I find it to be more pleasant that way, but I do wish that they would render the text and graphics in HD instead of just upscaling them.
