Hello all...

I have a question regarding signing up for DirecTV service & wanted to see what everyone thinks is the best route.

In early October, I will be moving out of my apartment into a house & will finally be freed from the shackles of cable.

Before moving into the apartment, I lived in the same house I'll be moving back into. For six years, I was a DirecTV subscriber. I moved out (divorce) & my ex-wife switched the service over to her name. (Sorry for all the details)

My question is this. When I call to get the dish upgraded for HD & to get the HD DVR, would it be best if I call as a previous subscriber or should I have my girlfriend call & have the service put in her name, as a new subscriber? What will give me the best chance to land the best deal(s)?

Thanks in advance!! :righton:

How close are you and your girlfriend? (you don't need to answer that) If you set it up in her name and she's gone soon, you would still have to switch it to your name, most likely start with a fresh new two-year commitment (to DirecTV, not the girlfriend :)) and I'm not sure what would happen regarding an Early Termination Fee.

If I were in the same situation, I'd be more likely to set it up in my own name and get whatever deals I could. YMMV

HA!!

We're very close & I won't say there's no chance she'll be gone, but I'm quite certain we're together for the long haul.

I'm not afraid of committing to DirecTV or the girlfriend, so I have no problem putting it under my name.

I was just curious if I'd have a better shot of getting something free by buying a new user or a returning user. I suppose I'll just act like I'm uncertain about the whole thing.

I appreciate the feedback!

Try calling as a 'returning' customer and see if you can get more than the current Sunday Ticket special. Maybe they'll throw a free HD DVR in or something. If not, just sign up with the standard deal. I don't see why you can't try to work it both ways and see what happens.

Good point! Thanks.

A lot may depend on how you were as a customer before. If you were good about your account, they may do something for you to get you back. I don't always advocate this, but you could call Dish, see what kind of new user deals you could get from them, then call DirecTV and explain that you're switching from cable and want to see if it's worth coming back. And if it works it's way into the conversation, you can tell them what Dish is offering. I wouldn't do that, though, unless you do plan to go under your name.

I don't know that you could get any (or much) better deals than what they may advertise in their web site for new customers. Might be worth taking a look.

Basically I'm hoping to either save some cash on the HD DVR (I just discovered this site, but so far I gather the HR20 is the way to go?), which I'll need two of, get a deal on the Sunday Ticket & maybe try to get the Sunday Ticket in HD without having to pay for the SuperFan. (I saw a thread that showed that's possible.)

If I strike out, I strike out. But I figured it's worth a shot.

The new customer deal right now (I'm not sure how much longer) is $69.99 a month for 4 months, and that includes the Premier Package (regularly $99.99 a month with all the movie channels & RSN Sports Pack), Sunday Ticket and they are supposed to include the HD Sunday Ticket games at no extra charge (though you will not get the other Super Fan features). They may deal that in for you as a returning sub, but I have no way of knowing that (could depend on your negotiating skills).
