View Full Version : Regional Sports Stations -- Stretched?

Just noticed that my Fox Regionals (FSS, SS) I can get seem to have gone to some sort of stretch-o-vision in the last few days. All my 4:3 material is now Obese -- it's not the TNT-HD Nausea-vision, but it looks like just a simple fill the 16:9 screen stretch.
It doesn't seem to have affected the TWC of the same channels and none of the other D* 4:3 channels seem to be affected so it's not my receiver or TV settings. I assume this is something being done at D*, but why just the Regional Sports channels. Am I missing something else or are all of the Regionals doing the same thing? Some people are sensitive to lip synch issues, some to DL rainbows, some to color shift, but geometry distortion seems to be my weakness.

Is this an H20 or what? I heard some folks having problems with MASN on an H20 recently like this.

The H20 has this bug due to the MLB EI interactive content. Any channel with interactive content, whether you can access it or not, will be stretched. The HR20 was like this in the beginning too, so it'll get fixed eventually.

This has been a problem for atleast two or three months. D* just doesn't support the H20's much. I would be upset if I only had an H20.

There have been several CEs for the H20 in the past couple months so they are indeed actively working on the H20s. Check the CE forum as there might be another CE tonight and Saturday night.

I remember the HR20 had this problem last year with ST for a couple weekends.
In my case; hitting the exit button put the channel in the correct aspect ratio.
This eliminated the special stat tracker on that channel; but I didn't have to deal with stretch-o-vision.

Yep, that explains it. My H20 just got the 2024 update a couple days ago and that was when I noticed it. Just noticed it on MASN as well -- both baseball games are being played by fat guys. Just UGLY.

Yep getting the same thing and it's brutal! Tried hitting the "exit" button but that didn't do anything. Any other suggestions to fix this darn thing?
Update: Called Directv on this issue and was transferred to Tech support. Was told that they were aware of this problem and they are working on a fix to resolve the issue. Said a download will hopefully take place in the near future to fix it.
Other interesting note as we were finishing up the conversation the lady asked me if I was aware of the new HD channels coming. I said yes I was and asked when by chance would they start? She said she received a release yesterday and that the first group of HD's will start on September 16th. She went on to tell me exactly which one's would be live come Sept 16th and which ones would start in October. Read them right off a list.
Well, ten days later and still having issues with H20 stretching the Regional Sports Stations. Can't stand watching the screen like that!
Anybody else still having this problem or has anybody found a fix to this problem?

You can see if any new software updates have come across by pressing 02468 at the start-up screen.

And obviously she was wrong about the first new HD channels starting on the 16th.
I have noticed this problem a couple of times on the H20 we have in the kitchen, which is connected to a nice 26" LCD 1080p HDTV. I switched over to some other 4:3 channels and they displayed normally. I assumed that there was some sort of a problem as it was intermittent.

When you say "start-up" screen do you mean the blue screen when the receiver resets? Or is it something else?

yes. it's the screen after you press the red reset button. the first screen usually says "welcome to directv" or something to that effect. i usually press the 02468 code on the second blue screen. Pressing the 02468 during a non-CE window will download the latest national version. downloading it during a CE-window will download that specific CE.

I have an H20 connected to a 4x3 screen and noticed what I assume is the same issue on the Sunday Ticket Red Zone HB channel, 718. I couldn't get the thing to not stretch the image up and down, causingeveryone to look skinny. All the other HD channels in the 70's were letterboxed like they should have been.

I did the software update and unfortunately it didn't fix my problems on the regional sports stations but at least I have the latest software version now. Wasn't aware how you could do that so thanks for letting me know.
Like I stated above Directv is aware of the issue so hopefully they will find the fix for it in a hurry! But I'm not holding my breath...
