What is the best deal on the ViP622? I've been quoted over $500 for the DVR and that seems quite high. I'll be signing up for HD + local + Top 100, but would change that if it gets me a better price on the DVR.
I suspect you are a NEW subscriber instead of an existing sub. If so, there would be no cost for a LEASED 622. Were you comparing to the PURCHASE cost of a 622 to get the $500 figure? As long as you've never been a DISH subscriber, you can also save the $50 activation fee with a ClubDISH referral. If you commit to 18 months (you need to to get the free 6 months of DishHD), you also get a $50 credit on your first bill. In essence, they pay you $50 to accept the 622 and install to get the 18 month commit to ATxxx plus DishHD.
If you have (or currently do) subscribe to DISH, different rules apply - especially if your subscription is via a 3rd party (like AT&T). You'd need to mention if that is the case.

In case if you still interesting to buy your own 622 then check eBay - sometimes you can catch it for $300+.
CABill: I get Dish through Embarq. Can you tell me what rules apply for upgrade?
Sorry, I don't know anything about Embarq. If you search for Embarq, you'll see others have phoned and got prices for 622/722 upgrades - http://www.dbstalk.com/showthread.php?p=1065203&highlight=Embarq#post1065203
I'd just phone and ask.
