View Full Version : Question about STB's
If you put a cable wire that gets locals into the CATV input on the box, does it put the channels in on the lower channels (Under 100)? And if you subscribe to locals from the sat company does that interfere with them? Cause my cable co. gives us Hartford New Haven and New York locals and I can get ABC, NBC and FOX from LA one either sat company (D* customer service told me that and the E* website too.)

If you're getting the locals via cable or OTA, those locals will not appear in your channel guide AT ALL (unless you're subscribing to them via satellite). The distant nets won't appear in their normal channel numbers either.

Short answer: No.
Long answer: The mapping of DBS channels to local channels occurs only if you subscribe to a local channel package offerred by the DBS provider.
The standard video jacks act only as a pass-through for antenna/cable input & output. The input is for the antenna or cable, but it's treated as a pass through. The output from the PVR box can be switched from the antenna/cable to the DBS signal, but the DBS signal will be in mono only.

Actually, if you have Dish Network's model 5000 reciever, you can use the local link feature to map the cable channels and have the STB tune in the cable channels. However, this STB does not map the local channels from Dish Network to the appropriate channel, they are still up in the 8000 range.
BTW, Z'Loth, love the Shadow vessel!
So I wouldnt be able to go through the channels and have all of the ones from the cable co. on the lower channels?

Yes but only if you have either a 5000 receiver or the 6000 with the ota tuner.
Well we are probably going with D*, do any of there receivers allow this?

I don't think so... but I'll check my manuals for you.

I have cable with the 6000. The 6000 allows you to put in the network affiliation and the call letters of the local stations as you set them up.
When you bring up the guide most of the time it just says "Local Programming" but when you press info it will give you the information. It is really kinda odd, it can tell you all about the show, just not the name.
It seems to work better on some networks than others, I assume that it depends on which guide service Dish is using for the program info.
My locals are not carried on Dish.
The Hughes HD model receiver integrates your ota locals into the program guide. I do not know about the other receivers for DTV because I receive lil and have no need to use the ota signal on the other receivers. On the HD receiver the locals I receive from DTV appear ahead of the ota HD signal. The station numbers and logos for the ota signal also appear on the guide. I would guess that ota signals are integrated into the guide is because there is an ota tuner in the receiver. You may wnat to check the with store you buy the receiver from to see if it has a ota tuner.

You probably are aware of this but just in case:
You can connect the cable directly to the "antenna" input of your TVs and view the cable ch's on their normal ch nos. The sat rcvrs can be connected to most modern TVs ("Monitor/Receivers") with A/V or S-Video connections. Then you just switch the "input" of the TV to see & hear what you want. (Of course you can route the audio through a stereo system or the A/V though a home theater system as well.)
Alternatively, if you connect the cable to the ant/cable input of the STB and the "TV Out" of the STB to the"Ant In" on the TV you will see the Sat on Ch 3 or 4 & the cable ch's on there own nos. when you hit the "Sat/TV" or "TV/Video" button or turn off the STB.
Or you can use a Signal Combiner so that the Sat signal on Ch 3 or 4 doesn't interfere with the locals whether or not the STB is on & regardless of Sat/TV mode.
