I am having my dvr replace with an HD-dvr on Thursday. The install is being paid for by Direct. But, while the installer is there. I would like to run a cable from the dish to my daughters room (we might be giving her a direct receiver). Any tips on approaching an installer to run the cable? And if he will, how much should it cost?

I may run the cable myself and let him hook it to the dish...figured it would save me money.

Maybe to late now, but I would have ordered the extra receiver (with installation) at the same time as the HD upgrade. That would have gotten the wiring done.

Best suggestion now is to ask the installer, with gratuity in hand. If it isn't too difficult a run, he'll probably do it. Or, as you suggest, pull the run yourself and ask him to connect it when he does the dish work for the HD upgrade.

Carl,

Thanks for the info. I might just give her the my old dvr. It's a pain in the ass with the lockups. But, it plays tv shows fine and hopefully, they will fix the software soon. Any ideas how much I should offer?

Thanks!

I think if the work order says 'relocate' receiver, then they will run wires needed ( someone will correct me if i am wrong, but i believe thats what was on my work order when i got my HR20 and had the hughes tivo moved to another room)...

Hope that helps ...

It's not a matter of deciding how much to "tip" him, it is a negotiation for his time. He will tell YOU how much he wants to do the work. If he actually does it for free, I would give a healthy tip...

I charge $55 per extra line if no multiswitch is needed. Another $50 or more if the switch is needed, depending on how easy it is to install on your system. Some charge more, some less, and some won't do it at all. Your best bet is to ask the installer how much he will charge once he gets there he gets there.

Bottom line, every install is different. Be polite, be friendly, and be honest.
