I tried the search function. I did. Really. There's just an ocean of information.

1) There seem to be some posts that say to unplug the HR20, plug in the eSATA, replug in the HR20. Other posts talk about doing a "reset" in the HR20 instead. What's the deal?

2) Can you definitely remove the eSATA to go back and forth to the internal drive to finish watching old recordings? If so, do you need to unplug the HR20 everytime you do this too? If so, can I just plug both into my UPS and power that off each time?

Thanks!

You can definitely go back to internal drive and watch old recordings.

I never unplug anything. If I want to go to internal drive, I do a menu reset/restart on HR20 and when the first blue screen shows up or when the lights go off on the hr20 front panel (to make sure hr20 is no longer writing to the disk) I turn the power off on the eSATA. Switching back to external is similar except now I turn the eSATA power to on.

Basically hr20 selects the internal disk if at boot up it doesn't detect eSATA (which can be done by either unplugging eSATA or powering it off, and I prefer the latter as I don't want to mess around with the eSATA cable). I don't think there is any need to unplug the hr20 since the selection is happening at startup, so a restart is good enough.

The plugging or unplugging stuff can be tried if you run into problems but I have never had to resort to it.

I was confused about that before I got my Seagate last week as well. But, yes, you definitely do not need to unplug your 20 to get it to recognize the e-sata drive. Just do a menu restart - but not an RBR: see my thread on this forum on the problems that gave me last night!

Thanks all. So, to clarify, you don't ever need to unplug the HR20? You can even do the menu reset the first time you plug in the eSATA drive?

I am using a Seagate FA Pro with a Startech cable. It recognized the esata drive right away. I recorded a program, but when I tried to watch it, it went straight to do you wish to delete this program. So I used the RBR and now I can't get the HR20 to recognize the esata drive. Any ideas?
Thanks,
Jeff

I now have everything working. I had to unplug the receiver and the esata drive, in order to get the drive recognized again. Am I going to have to do this everytime the receiver is reset? What about resets after software upgrades?
