I'm so confused. I thought DirecTV and Tivo went their separate ways, but all I keep hearing about is updates and new features to Tivo units....got a mailer yesterday from DirecTV about it in fact. When I upgraded to an HD DVR I was very unhappy because of all the differences from the DVR I already had (Tivo-based) and was basically told to "suck it up and deal with it" because it was the only choice. Is that still the case? Will there be an HD-DVR with Tivo features after all? I still really dislike my HR-20.

1) DirecTV and TiVo still have a contract in place till 2011
2) That contract still provides conditions for software upgrades
No software upgrade can make the HR10-250 receive the two new sats..
No software upgrade can make the HR10-250 be able to decode the new HD format.
So with that regards... DirecTV and TiVo has gone their seperate ways...
But they are still supporting, and maintaining their legacy products.
There have been zero announcements about any new DTiVo hardware platform.
From a press report on the change in control at DirecTV from Murdoch to MaloneTiVo Inc. said on Monday it sees an improved relationship with DirecTV Group after the satellite television provider is taken over by media mogul John Malone's Liberty Media Corp.
So maybe somebody has hopes of a future product?

DIRECTV and TiVo still have a good business relationship, but there's no reason to think that DIRECTV will abandon all the work they've put into their Plus-series DVRs.
2011's still a long way away, but I don't see anything changing.
All people want is a choice for their HD receiver and not to have the Direct TV receiver ramed down throat.. cable gives you a choice , (series 3 Tivo) and Direct TV is suppose to be the consumer choice for HDTV show some respect for the consumer you say you want to keep happy

Tell that to people in Hawaii, and other markets that have already been converted to SWV...
Cable-Card was shoved down the throats of the cable-co's... and they are still fighting it..... so don't be under the "illusion" that Cable gives consumers a choice...

Cable doesn't give consumers a choice at all. You get their box and you'll like it is the way they want it. If not for the government making them offer cable cards there would be no other choice such as a Tivo S3. Now that Switched Video is rolling out they can trash the cable cards and you'll be right back to their cable box...and you'll like it.
Let's get real, people don't want a choice and be confused. Joe Sixpack will just take whatever you give him. Anything more then that is too confusing.
