Sounds good to me!

Since Spokane are my local stations this could mean some better pics on the locals. :D

Off the air signal isn't the best here, tranlator is on a 5500 foot mountain about 12 miles away and it isn't exactly the cleanest rf place in the world. Great view up there though, I've helped with some work with the local TV district in the past.

Will these be on 110 or 119 if they come to exist?

RE: Spokane- I work at one of the Spokane stations... I'm pretty sure that two of the stations here are holding out for more $$ from dish, so even though they have all the stations listed, I don't think we'll end up with all of them right away. At least we'll get the rest, though!

Hey Adsman or anyone, when will Louisville be available? I e-mailed DISH and they said that no tentative date has been set for Louisville, and realy would not even acknowledge that Louisville will be added at all! Aggravating! Anyone know when we can subscribe to Louisville locals. Need some inside info here. I live in Southeastern Kentucky, but I will be "moving" to Louisville when the locals become available...strange coincidence isnt it? :-)

Touchdown Kentucky,

I really don't have any clue when it will happen. Did you see this link.. http://www.dishchannelchart.com if you scroll almost to the end you can see where the louisville locals are upliked...so who knows how long. I sure don't. I have to rely on the good people on here with a little inside info...

TDKY,

If and when the Louisville channels go up, before you "move", make sure you can receive transponder 4 from the 110° satellite. If you don't, you won't be able to receive these channels. As to launch date, all I know is they want to have them up before the end of the year. However WAVE may have other ideas.

Tony: Thanks for the info. So, How do I go about making sure I can receive the Louiosville satellite and transponder before I "move"? Please help. Also, have you heard a rumor or anything that WAVE-TV might be causing some sort of a delay in the locals? Just curious. You are a wealth of information!! Hope the channels are on soon so I can move. :-)
Thanks again!!

TDKY,

Tok check to see if you get signal form transponder 4 at 110 press "Menu"+6+1+1 on your remote (most receivers). This will take you to the dish pointing screen. It will show you a satellite and transponder as well as signal strength. Change the settings in that screen until you have the 110 satellite and transponder 4 selected on the receiver. If you can "see" transponder 4 (get a good signal), you'll be able to see the louisville locals when they become available (after you "move").

Tom-

The following opinion is my own and not neccesarily that of my employer. That being said, I believe KHQ may strike a deal soon, possibly by thursday in time for the launch. I have no idea about KAYU, but I'd be surprised if they held out too long.

pbrown
12-11-02, 10:55 PM
Good News! KHQ came through with an 11th hour deal, so NBC-Spokane will be represented in the Spokane Locals. Now the only one holding out is KAYU, and from what I understand all the dealers in town are telling customers to call them and complain... they shouldn't hold out too long.

firephoto
12-11-02, 11:56 PM
Great News! KHQ is a very good channel, and now I'll have some better pq too. Now KAYU needs to just put off some of those "business trips" and they won't need the extra dollars they are trying to get. (might hurt a few golf games though) :)
Now just to wait to see what tomorrow, the 12th, brings. Hopefully a simple call and quick results. My luck it will be the on hold forever with terrible music or something and then a "soon" answer. lol

Omaha will be coming, just haven't heard quite when that will be. Cedar Rapids is also supposed to be on before January 1 of 2003, Dish is in the process of obtaining retransmission consent from both markets now. I do know that at least one Cedar Rapids station had not reached an agreement as of two weeks ago.

Hey guys, here is a response that I got today from WDRB FOX (Louisville). Doesnt sound too good, can anyone shed some light...

While I feel certain that the day that all stations in the Louisville
market will be carried by the Dish network is not far off, I would
caution you that assurances being given by several Dish dealers in the
area that such a thing is "definitely" going to happen in the next few
weeks or by a specific date are premature at best and dishonest at
worst.

All parties involved are working to see that this does happen -- and let
me say that, should EVERYTHING suddenly fall into place, it actually
COULD happen extremely soon -- but I would feel as if I were misleading
you if I gave you any kind of guarantee as to a particular date.

Believe me -- when it DOES happen, that fact will be highly publicized.

Sorry I can't be more reassuring, but I do thank you very much for your
interest.

Sincerely,

TK dude,
LOL - why not drop it already,
This "chit" supposed to be kinda "secret" anyhow, but you keep on pushing and pushing...
You will not make it happen, it will just happens when it happens...

"While I feel certain that the day that all stations in the Louisville

caution you that assurances being given by several Dish dealers in the
area that such a thing is "definitely" going to happen in the next few

worst." - see He is right in covering his behind here, - he is saying "ALL the stations in local", at the same time he is correct to not know specific date...Often some stations hold out...and he is only at Fox anyhow looks like....
So why press it..you asked few times..you ve been given some estimates...i d just sit back and relax now...They d show up when they d show up, it is really beyond your control...Unless publically announced - no specific date...
You must have those locals now..or put some Antenna and get them for fre for now until they show up :)
TV, locals - is not the end of the world or everything in Life..
Actually the guy in this letter - didn't tell you "a word" that you haven't already known...
if the privious reports about them coming this week are correct, then you actually know more then him or more then he is willing to reveal...
Like do not get me wrong - there is nothing wrong to call and write letters, etc...but you just seem to be going that "extra mile",
Just slow down a bit...
You are stepping into their territory..Things like this are mostly kept out of public (for negotiating purposes, etc).. - I am actually starting to regret starting this thread and providing the info i provided..
All i said was "those few local markets were uplinked (or rumoured to be uplinked)...All that means is that Dish is getting them in place in ready to be launched sometime soon to the subscribers....nothing more nothing less....Of course that should be taken in as a Positive sign...But until any date is given OFFICIALLY to the public..Dish can reserve the right to keep them there "on hold", unavailable to general public Forever!

Nice to see your Enthusiasm, but just slow down a BIT :)

[EDIT]: there you go - you got official response with a date now...
not to say that all stations in the market will become available..i do not know the situation, but maybe some are in negotiation or something..
In any case, congrats...

P.S. - See, privious reports that those locals will become available this week were accurate and correct anyhow :)

I would caution against a sudden move that happens to coinside with the LIL announcement, especially if it isn't accompanied with a dish mover request. Before moving, it might be an idea to check with local networks to see if they will authorize a waver. But if you do this and attempt negotiations with E*, be sure your move is believable. Were I in your position, and if I would choose to follow your course of action, I would wait a month, possibly two. If you have corresponded with E* on the subject, be aware that is logged, and probably recorded (if phone) and filed, if electronic or postal mail.

TNGTony
12-19-02, 06:06 PM
What a bunch of CRAP!!!!

Dish should say, fine...We'll give you a DOLLAR a subscriber, but now you must provide fiber to the POP, pay for you share of the POP, backhaul, uplink and lost oportunity costs! I bet it's more than a dollar a sub!

I've said it before and I'll say it again, charging for some one to distribure your signal to YOUR area is CRIMINAL!

BTW using the 7.5¢ logic, no one here should EVER buy a $1 fountain pop (soda) again. You know how much money it costs the distributor? Lets put it this way...the cup costs WAY more.

See ya

bryan27
12-19-02, 06:37 PM
Tony, I agree with you on that one! WAVE has also overlooked the fact that there are 7 locals. At 5.99 that's 85 cents per sub not a DOLLAR! They actually want 15 cents more than what E* charges per channel!!!

This is nothing but greed. I bet not one cable company in the Louisville market pays more than a few cents for WAVE, if they pay anything at all. What E* should do is say fine have it your way we just won't carry you, lets us know if you want on in three years.

George312
12-19-02, 06:42 PM
Tony the way i put it may have misled you. What WAVE says is since Dish charges us a dollar they think they should get more than 7.5 cents per sub i did not mean that WAVE was asking for a dollar per sub. Sorry if i confused you.

TNGTony
12-19-02, 10:01 PM
George... Thanks, but I did understand what you meant. WAVE wants more than the 7.5¢ Dish is offering. WAVE says that Dish charges subs a dollar for the channel.

What I was saying was fine...we'll give you what we charge (not that they do, but just for argument's sake) but then you pay all the costs associated with putting the channel on the satellite down to the marketing.

The point I made with the pop comment in my previous statement was to illustrate that just because something costs the consumer a dollar doesn't mean that the cost of the product is a dollar...or anything even close.

Anyway....I still think that all stations that refuse retransmission consent to their own area's viewers they should have their licenses revolked THAT INSTANT for refusing to serve the public they were entrusted to serve with FREEEEEEEEE (and finite) bandwidth.

See ya
Tony

My understanding is the small fee authorized by the FCC is intended to cover the DBS operator's costs associated with retransmission. WJLA, WUSA, WRC, WTTG, WBDC, WDCA, WETA, WNVC, WHUT, and WNVT don't receive any money from me if I put up an antenna, but they do (I think) from cable companies in the area. Media General created a big mess when they refused to carry WTTG. Their story was that Merdock was requiring Fox News to be part of their lineup. So if all the station need do is provide board outs, that's a pretty big kickback for 4 ports on a board.
Out of curiosity, do these 10 channels feed to a common hub, then share a longhall circuit back to the uplink site? Is that uplink placed in a neutral place or conveniently located near somebody's gigapop? If it's at an equinix facility, costs can go up there.
Then there's the uplink equipment, surely the stations don't have to buy that. But what doesn't make sense to me is
Once the initial equipment is paid for, besides circuit costs, what reoccurring costs exist?

Touchdown Kentucky
12-20-02, 08:41 AM
Surely WAVe will come to their senses and get on board. Their public position right now is that they are still negotiating. If they get enough public pressure and ridicule, then maybe they eill accept the DISH offer.
TD KY

bryan27
12-20-02, 08:43 AM
jhall, WETA, WNVC, WHUT, & WNVT are all NCE stations they don't receive any money from Cable or DBS carriage. NCE stations can only ask for must carry, they aren't permitted to ask for retransmission concent.

All stations in an LIL market feed their signal to the local POP. This can be via fiber, OTA, microwave, etc... At the POP the signals are combined and sent to the uplink center either with a fiber connection or in some cases sent via satellite to the uplink center, either the one in Wyoming or the one in Arizona where they are uplinked to the DBS satellite.

Some other recurring costs would be rental of the local POP (the providers don't own the POPs) and an engineer at the POP. Occasional costs would involve equiptment replacement (nothing lasts forever).
