I just hard wired a highspeed internet modem to my HR20 and although it tells me my network is working it also tells me I can't connect to the internet. What am I missing? And what is the benefit of this hookup?

$50 says your ISP won't authorize the MAC address of the HR20 access to the internet.
Right now... DirecTV On Demand is the only feature that will use the Internet aspect of the connection

Can you give us some more information about the setup? Modem type, any routers? Any other PCs on the network? How many? Can you talk to them (media sharing).
The benefit today is none really but IIRC DoD uses it (and maybe remote booking but i cant really remember).

My ISP is Verizon Online. Is there any way to overcome this?

You reboot the modem? Sometimes a reboot is needed if you hardwired directly since the modem doesn't drop the bond it had with the prior computer. One benefit of a router IMO.

The modem is a Westell. It is a standalone connected directly to the HR20. My computer is in another room, so running a cable is too far, and I don't have a wireless for the LR.

I did reboot, but I will try again. Is it best to unplug, or just to switch off?

Unplug it, make sure the cable (cat 5) to the HR20 is unplugged as well. Then once the modem has booted up and all lights are up, plug the Cat 5 cable for the HR20 back in. See if that fixes the problem.

By chance, are you saying you've got 2 modems ? One on the HR20 and one on your computer ??

I did this and still the same issue.

Yes. I have a wireless internet router on my computer. Any thoughts on a decent wireless internet adapter?

Is this DSL? Does your ISP allow you to have two different modems which both log into their network with the same user ID/password? I could see this as a potential problem with the "duplicate" login being rejected when the modem boots up.
You may need to find another way to get the HR20 networked to your existing router.

Is your computer on a different network and connected to the internet?
Are you trying to run two dsl modems on one account and line? They will sync but wont give you an internet connection past verizon. Also if you turned it on on the PC moved the westell to another room and turned it on you may not get a public ip depending on your modem setup.
What make of Westell? Is it a black one?
Is it in the default configuration?

Yes it is DSL. Would I be better off with a wireless network adapter? Recommend one?

Sorry but you are getting confused with wireless adapters and dsl etc.
Starting with the basics:
How many dsl modems do you have? And if it is the black Westell is the internet light on it?

It sounds like he is using DSL. In general (these days) most DSL lines need a PPPoE connection created. In general this is done by the computer or router. The HR20 doesn't know how to initiate the PPPoE connection so it won't be able to connect to the internet. You are going to need a router in between the HR20 and the modem in order to establish the PPPoE connection (ie, give your username and password).

Do a reset on the HR-20 in the internet ( network) settings. The same thing happened to me when I went to FIOS from DSL . I reset the internet settings and everything came up.

Westell 2200 (White). I have no idea what configuration it is in as I hadn't used it in awhile and suddenly remembered I had one so I thought I would try it on the HR20. It does make sense that the ISP would not allow both to log on.

Explain all of the equipment you have and if the HR20 is within wiring distance to your computer.
IE:
1 DSL Modem (Westell x-x)
1 Wireless Router (Linksys WRTG54)

OK no it wont work connected directly. The 6100 would but not this. The HR20 cant initiate contact.
Your choices are to get a router (wireless or otherwise) and hook up your pc and then the HR20 so the pc and router do it all.
Is your PC connected to the internet somehow? Another dsl or cable modem?
You can now get good Powerline network devices. These let you run a wired network encrypted over your powerline. Basically you plug one end into the router a wall power socket and then the other end into a wall socket in another room and an ethernet cable to it and the HR20. There are 1 port and 4 port version of these - between $100 and $170 in BB etc.
You need to run a network with you pc and then let the HR20 jump on there.

The 327W is a router/modem that can handle all of the DSL handshaking (PPPoE). This doesn't work when connected to the HR20?
There can only be 1 DSL device plugged into the phone line at any given time. Make sure that the modem is disconnected when you plug the router/modem in. This isn't an issue of the ISP rejecting duplicate logins, more that they talk over each other, which is not good.
If you want to leave the router/modem in place you can just buy a wireless adapter (game adapter), and plenty of people will have opinions on good ones here.

I had this problem. I found out that the IP address was not correct on my HR20.
Example:
HR20: 192.168.10.xx
Network IP: 192.168.11.xx
192.168.10.xx configuration is normal but my Buffalo wireless router assigned .11.xx IP's.
I changed the IP address on the HR20 and all was fixed.
Not sure if this is your problem, but it could be. Go luck.

OK 2 problems there
1. you are running 2 dsl modems on one line so they wont work.
You have a router and pc hooked up already. Rather than a 60ft cable or a wireless setup for the HR20 i would seriously look into that Powerline network adapter i mentioned. Plug one end into the wireless router and the other in the HR20. They work - i have recently done one for a customer this week.

It looks like the wireless adapter will be my best bet. I will welcome any and all opinions. Will I automatically get DoD, or is this still in trial mode?

I've never used this and can't vouch for it, but this sounds like the sort of thing you may be looking for:

If I understand it correctly, it seems to hook into devices with standard Ethernet ports and allow them to access a wireless network. No idea if that will work with the HR20, though.

I just checked this Buffalo out. It sounds like exactly what I need, even for my son's Playstation connection. Thank you.

Bust Buy, Circuit City both have powerline adapters in my city
Another option is to use powerline technology instead of wireless this may give more throughput than you may get on wireless. I personally use Linksys PLK200 with great success.

Earl,
Is there a way to work around this? I've got the exact same problem using Verizon FIOS. Internet comes into the Actiontec router and goes four different ways--the three computers all work fine, the HR20 does not. I have gotten it to work for brief periods at a time either by rebooting everything or by refreshing the signal via the DTV website but it usually doesn't last long (less than 24 hours). I've tried changing the IP adress range on the router and then manually assigning an IP address to the HR20 but that doesn't work either . Help!

Sorry for question. can i connect my HR-20 to wirelless adapter, not to the router.
I have my router in another room, connect to my Vista PC.
Thank you
Yes it is DSL. Would I be better off with a wireless network adapter? Recommend one?
You have a wireless router correct? A Buffalo Wireless Ethernet bridge will run ya around 60$. Have you tried wiring the HR20 to ethernet port on wireless router???
