Ok guys, I'm taking the plunge, but living in Alaska makes things a bit more complicated.
At some point in the last 2 years (the last time I called and tried to get service) DirecTV finally started offering free installs up here, before then I was told I would need to get a local installer to install the dishs and I would incur all charges for install, which to get HD was around $1300 for two 4 foot dishes (can't use small dishes in Alaska).
Fast forward to yesterday, I called them again because of all the 100 HD channels stuff going on to see if I could get in on it. Amazingly they said Alaska was now in their install pool now and would have the same fees as the lower 48.
So, I'm getting 1 HR20 HD DVR with 3 additional HD recievers (they said they are free for my region?) totalling $199 after $100 mailin rebate.
Apparently installs for Alaska are handled completely seperately from everyone else, I can't even schedule the install over the 800 number. I called the special number and talked to one of their techs. He said that as of right now they require two 3 or 4' dishes if I want HD with locals, etc.
Anyone else require 2 dishes to get full service?
On a side note, I called up thinking was going to save money over my existing cable, but it turns out it's going to get about identical at around $130. I'm going with the premium package + $15 for additional boxes + $9.99 HD fee = $125.
