Are they usable by DBS?

They are trying to get permission from the FCC to broadcast DBS service to the US from that slot... Of course E* and D* are complaining about it because they say it would be too close to 101 and 110 and would interfere with the existing slots.

Could someone do the math? How much distance is 4.5 degrees at 22,000 miles? If the slot is approved, is there evidence that shows interference?

Thank you. There is a gentleman in another forum that isnsists DISH is in the process of buying the slot. His story never made sense.

The problem with interference is that the 18" dish is so small that the DBS slots need to be 9 degrees apart to keep from picking up adjacent slots. The smaller the dish the less focused it is and "sees" a larger swatch of the sky. The opposit problem is People trying to use dishes larger than 12' start having a problem that they see the individual satellites in the orbital location instead of the illusion of a single satellite.

Now SES is arguing that 18" dishes are ok with 4.5 degrees of separation because they do indeed work, but it requires a much more accurate pointing. A dish pointed 2 degrees off now will still work, but if SES goes into operation it probably will not work any more. It is more complicated because multisatellite dishes are harder to point accurately.

Would an analogy of this be to think that the same result of a satellite being at 105 slot and having dishes at a larger size bring the same result as no satellite being at 105 slot and having smaller dishes, or vice versa, something to that affect? Something that we can do now that could compare this being 9 degrees apart?

I think like explained it well Jacob. That is if I understood your question.

From the way I heard it, they where planning to flip the polarity so instead of transponder 1 using right hand Circular Polarity, it would use Left hand Circular Polarity.

By using this method, it should work without a problem. However it will make it more difficult for installers to point a Dish since you could accidently pick up the slot at 105 instead of 110 or 101

To be honest, I think that there's just a whole bunch of excuses from DirecTV and Echostar who enjoy their current stronghold on the DBS market. Moreso from Echostar who wants an outright monopoly.

The FTA receivers will not be able to pick up the 105 slot will it if they reverse the polarity? The Dish Network and DirecTv receivers would not be able to pick up the slot either would they? Or is there a device in which could allow them to pick up the slot in reversed polarity? It would be nice if those receivers could be used to be activated for the 105 slot, especially those that have used receivers and the such. This could keep production costs down because they could be made in bulk.

Yes, the FTA receivers will be able to pick up the 105 slot if the polarity is reversed. When you program an FTA receiver you program in the polarity for every TP. If TP 1 is Vertical, Horizontal, Left, or Right the FTA reveiver will pick it up. For example on T5 at 97w TP1 is Vertical, on G-3C at 95w TP1 is Horozontal. An FTA receiver will receive both sats even though G-3C has flipped polarity.

It all has to do with the position of the receiving rod inside the LNB.
