They have used it...

Once or twice... but they have used it.

Ten years ago it was used quite a bit but it fell into disfavor and usage has virtually stopped.

Yep there was a time when they used it pretty regularly. They do still use it but not very often.

I had them turn all of my messages off years ago, they would send out messages promoting either for channels I was already receiving or for naughty nighty channels and the kids could view them. Now if I could just stop the showcases on the DVR’s.:D

I remember when it was frequently used to announce Free View periods, upcoming PPV specials, new channels, and anything else they were pushing..... too bad it's underutilized now. They should use it more to announce the free previews of various channels and when they add new channels.

This would be a perfect opportunity to use it again, once the new HDs start rolling out.

Go ahead, DirecTV! Toot your own horn!

They use it as needed.

We would get a "Please activate your DirecTv service" message from them on rare occasions, after we swapped the bad disk drive out of our HR10-250 with a PTV upgrade disk and switched from phone to network "calls" to DirecTv.

Then, the HR10-250 started acting up occasionally over the past few weeks, and we started getting these messages up to five or more a day.

They stopped, as I expected they would, when we swapped the HR10-250 out with an HR20 a week or so ago.

The CSRs never could explain why we were getting those mesages. Se, we'd just delete them.

I just got a free PPV in the mail this month and thought, Wow it's been a long time since I've seen one of those! :)

Yeah, on my ancient 1999 box I used to get messages regularly; now, almost never.

I have little doubt that will be the next message we see.

They actually surveyed their customers 11 years ago. After the survey the near daily messages stopped. I suspect I know what the results of the survey were.

+1 !rolling But I can remember those times well also  I think in the past the messages were overused and now they aren't used often enough  The last message I got was about HOT PASS. Correction that was the second to last one I got. The last one was about HD.

How did you manage that? I haven't seen one of those in years and years! Back years ago we had so many we couldn't use them all. And now I would like some to use.

There's a difference between using the message system to keep people informed and spamming people. If they are selective, I think it could be a good thing. Then it just falls on someone to decide what is actually important and how much is too much - that's where opinions will vary greatly!

I used to enjoy the messages in the "good old days" because they were usually of interest-like announcing a free premium channel weekend or some new channel being added to the lineup.

Now, the few messages you do get are plugs for their overpriced sports subscription packages (just like that annoying showcase pushing NASCAR HOT PASS) or some wrestling crap that costs $49.95. It's bad enough putting up with their plugs on the basic channels that allow D* to insert their own ads!!

The message system is a nice feature that once again could be used as a method of distributing informative messages--but nowadays all you get are ads ads ads everywhere you turn.

Personally I wish they were used more. I agree that it's an unused marketing opportunity and a great way to send non-critical information.

It'd be easier to tell you what I didn't do... It just came in the mail! :)
