Hi --
It seems that the HD Demo channel is an endless loop of the same +/- 20 minutes of programming. Couldn't they use this bandwidth to add some actual HD content? They say HD is expensive and takes lots of space, yet they waste some of this space with this awful and repetitive channel.
Any thoughts?
JT
If they had some HD content that would be valuable to add, they would find space without disturbing the Demo Channel. The Demo Channel is apparently used in showrooms for demonstration.
The HD Demo channel was originally for showroom use only, when a dealer sets up a system in a customers home it is the only source sometimes that he can count on to have a true HD picture. Example the customer only subscribes to Showtime and the current movie is an upconverted program, will it look as good as the customer expects HD to look?

It is on the wing satellite 61.5. The demo feed is a lot better since they put all the Discovery clips on it. You have to have an HDTV reciever to see them though. It is a great WOW station to show off HDTV to visitors.
It technically is not wasting any bandwidth because it is on a frequency not allocated to Dishnetwork. It is on transponder 7 which is the R/L DBS slot. Don't know what they will do with it if R/L DBS ever lauches their satellite.
It is on channel 9443.

Actually Dish holds a license for several transponders at 61.5, but not all the transponders Dish uses at 61.5. The remainder of transponders used at 61.5 are being leased from Dominion, whom provide the Sky Angel service of religious programing.
Dominion don't have a need for all their transponder licenses at 61.5 and since they don't have a satellite at 61.5 the agreeement is that DIsh uplinks their programing in exchange for use of several Dominion transponders.

R/L DBS owns licenses for Transponders 1-21 odd.
EchoStar owns licenses for transponders 2-22 even.
Dominion owns licenses for transponders 25-32.
Transponders 23-24 are unassigned.
EchoStar has an STA(Special Temporary Authority) from the FCC to operate on all 32 Transponders at 61.5 until other license holders are using theirs. Dominion is using theirs in an agreement as mentioned above with EchoStar which allows EchoStar to use 6 of Dominion's 8 frequencies. R/L DBS is scheduled to launch their satellite mid-2003.

The only Odd transponder Dish is using from 1-21 at 61.5 is Transponder 7 for the HD demo channel all the rest of the transponders Dish uses at 61.5 are either their own license or leased back from Dominion.
