The first 2 times I tuned to CNN HD, I get heavy pixelation, but it did clear up.

Update! Problem fixed.

Just an FYI, my pixelation was due in part to a bad cable. The cable was replaced and I'm now fully enjoying the additional HD programming.

I noticed that the HD and SD channels have different crawls at the bottom.

Probably due to the aspect ratio of the screen. The Crawl is likely the same info, just phased differently because of the screen sizes :).

So what programs on CNN are actually going to be in HD?? It was my understanding that they've been ready for HD. But yet, I wake up this morning and see the HD bars on the left and right side during the American Morning program. I mean, I really don't like CNN because I am a conservative :D , but I'll watch it for the HD. But then again, I'm not sure if I really want to see Larry King that close up.

By the way, I've been scrolling through to see what zap2it.com has listed for CNN HD. Nothing. Anyone know??

what you were seeing was a field broadcast.

..the show was HD out of the studio:

..as far as "everywhere else it's SD" .. many of their other studios / bureaus are HD ready camera-wise and what not when the transmission infrastructure is.. so it's only a matter of time.

Yes I notice full screen crawl and black bars. My quess is this program is not broadcast out New York where the new HD studio is. But the morning show are out of Atlanta there SD studio.

"All NYC-originated programming will be HD (AC 360, American Morning, etc)
The Situation Room and main Atlanta studios will be SD at launch, but are rapidly converting over to HD
Field cameras are being upgraded to XDCAM HD. Expect some field reports in HD this year
Washington DC facilities will be able to route/edit in HD (i.e.: shots from White House, etc)"

one curiousity i have is with graphics... if you look at that home price thing above, the graphics are basically the same as what an SD person would see. it basically looks like they were made to fit on SD ratio, then the background graphic fills the HD ratio... i imagine in time production will improve to make better use of the screen real estate for HD viewers... in this example if there were a list of 10 markets, they could've somehow adjusted it to show all 10 vs 5 at a time or what not.

but as far as putting additional info that SD views don't see... one issue with doing that is the anchor is announcing both for HD and SD broadcasts... so the anchor can't say "our HD viewers can see this video as well on the left of the screen, sorry SD people" ... (though what better way to promote HD)

That is exactly why you won't see this change anytime soon. There are ALOT of 4:3 TV's out there. There is only 1 HD set in my house and 4 SD sets. They have to allow for that.

I'm 2 and 2 right now. Probably get an HDTV for the master bedroom within the next year. It has an H20 in there now and a really nice (for its day) 1997 Panasonic 36" flat screen SD CRT. The spare BR has our old kitchen TV in there connected to basic cable and an old DVD player. It will remain so for probably a very long time. Our occasional guests will just have to gut it out. Hey, it is connected to the DVD player over component at least! :D

From what I understand, American Morning, The Situation Room, Lou Dobbs, and nearly anything else produced from their New York studios will be in HD. Stuff from the Death Star here in Atlanta (sorry, CNN Center for the uninitiated) is still in SD, and will be until late this year/early next year.

Their Planet in Peril special that they've been touting for next month will be in HD, as will many of their special projects starting later this year.

Understood. The same can be said about many of the new "HD" channels at this point, of course.

It's chicken-and-egg. The content providers don't generate the HD content until they get carriage agreements, but the distributors don't see any need to carry the channels without the HD.

This will be changing, though of course not as fast as we'd all like. DirecTV carrying all these channels will make a difference.

Wolf Blitzer is based in DC; the situation room is based out of DC...

though they wouldn't uplink it out of DC, they'd do that out of NY. so perhaps this is really what is meant, since post production is done in NY.

also larry king is out of LA but also has a mirror studio in TWC. occasionally he will be in TWC and occasionally there are guests sitting at the studio in NY while he is in LA. (i too imagine he isn't all that excited about people getting to zoom in on the craters of his face). and will the lite bright studio look too cheap in HD? Hmm :) ..due to the studio's history i don't think that set is ever changing.

I get teh black bars too that says HD/high definition. The crawler though looks to be for HD, very crisp.

I find it funny that my local news station has been able to make the jump to HD. Yet CNN can't do it yet. Especially in their main Atlanta Newsroom. I can understand regional or field cameras taking more time. not having your main studio is not HD seems rather pathetic.

taylorhively
09-26-07, 11:12 AM
LOL. I just tuned in. The only thin in HD is the crawler. It's nice to not see MPEG artifacted crawler text for change (crawler looks great.)
But the video is all in 4x3 SD with side panels.
I guess I'll have to wait for an HD show. But as usual, even the SD stuff looks better because it's in-studio upscaled vs the SD channel with has been downscaled to 480x480 by DirecTV (and looks like crap on my LCD.)

Now at least when you walk in to a bar or airport (that has the capability) you don't see CNN SD stretched to 16x9 aspect ratio, they may actually have this channel which will look right.

Now if they could get scifi channel in HD, a channel that actually broadcasts HD content most of the time letterboxed in HD rather than waste time and bandwidth bringing up things like CNN that don't even have HD content yet. Something tells me it's Universals fault on that channel, though.

That's what letterboxing is for ;)

You said a mouthful there, Sir. I had a 4:3 all my life and griped when I got letterboxed TV, but I opine that it is time to start using the 16:9 grid for cropping the shots.

Owners, Producers, Directors, Cameramen and women, take note.

I've even taken to still photography in 16:9 and video always.

I agree, it's very soft. But it's not the signal, because the crawl is still razor sharp. It's very common for older anchors to mandate that the camera shooting them is softened, so that they look "better" in HD. As you can tell from this thread, there was no softening when Kiran Chetry was on the screen. ;)

LOL, I posted that over at AVS a while ago!

I think Larry King will be HD (when available). I took the studio tour in NYC last year and they said that he actually has several different sets scattered around the country for taping the show. So I would assume anything done in NYC will be HD, while the others will remain SD for now. Kind of sucks, but we'll get there eventually. :)

Well, I have confirmed a theory I had about myself. Without intoducing politics into this discussion, I will simply say that I have tended to watch FoxNews much more than CNN in the past (just a matter of preference). As I expected, now that CNN is HD, I have been watching CNNHD about 100 times more than I've been watching FoxNews(SD). This may change when FoxNews eventually launches HD.

Again, this is not a political comment. It merely shows how important HD is to me. Heck, I've watched The Today Show and GMA a lot in the past two years (and I hate those shows) just to get my morning news in HD.

And Robin Meade (Headline News in the mornings) is even prettier.

Can someone post a pic of Robin Meade in HD? :D

Maybe with all the listings I just missed it, but is there any indication if and when MSNBC might be going HD for us? I like CNN alright, but have some specific shows that I always watch (and even regularly record) like the 5-8 a.m (central) Joe in the Morning and Keith Olbermann's Countdown.

Any hints?

The DirecTV website now has accurate dates for these deployments...
At least it got these latest ones right.

I don't see anything resembling HD quality on Lou Dobbs this evening...it looks like upconverted SD to me. The host's face is downright "smeary". (Lou is off tonight) The only thing that looks reasonably good is the news "crawl".:)

It is definately HD. When I went to 202 it was an awesome huge studio. Then I went to 202 (SD) and it was the old SD picture (YUCK). Back to 202 and CNNHD and it was awesome crisp and clear. Very nice indeed.

No, that just means it is upconverted SD and using lots more bandwidth than the SD channel (so less compression is used).

There is some HD on CNN, but not a great deal at this point.

The fact that SD looks so much better via the "HD" channels shows you how good SD can look, and what DirecTV has had to do to its SD channels to fit them all in the existing satellite capacity.

Probably so. But doesn't NBC do it for most of their prime-time dramas?

I've seen several people post in various threads through out the forum about HD programming on CNN. As far as I can tell, according to the guide and my eyes, there is absolutely no HD programming currently available on CNNHD (202). CNNHD has the HD bars on either side, while SD CNN has the solid black bars on either side. PQ looks identical to me.

So, is there true HD programming currently available on CNNHD, yes or no? If so, please post the show and the time. Thanks

Their morning show (American Morning I think) was 16:9 and looked HD. All of their remote reporters had panel bars on the side, but the hosts in studio where 16:9. Anyone else see it this morning?

It is my understanding that CNN can not do HD from Atlanta. The programs from New York are in HD. Since there HQ is Atlanta most is not HD. Even the programs from NY only the anchors are HD all tape is SD. Sort of a waste at this time.

It would be a waste, were it not for Kiran Chetry. She makes the whole HD channel worthwhile. Plus, you have the razor sharp HD ticker. You can't beat that!

Sorry, after doing a search I was unable to find an answer to my question. I originally posted this in "D* programming Q and A." The mods moved my post here. Hence, no, I didn't read any of this thread until now.

if you switch to the SD channel 202 does it still have the same 20 second delay?

on mine when i tune between the HD and SD 202 channels the timing is relatively the same..

haven't tried that yet but did you take into account that the HR20 takes about 6-10 seconds to change channels??

i currently have SD duplicated hidden but i will try that later tonight and see what the result is.

Some local stations are doing it for ratings survival. With less people watching local news it is one way to keep local viewers watching local news. Others are doing because someone else in the market did it first so they must do it also in order to survive.

As for the CNN Atlanta Newsroom it is REALLY hard to covert a tv studio that is live almost 24x7. So unless they want to build an entirely new studio/control room they have to take it one thing at a time. In New York they did build a new studio awhile ago that was ready for HD so all they had to was upgrade a couple of things and then there were able to send there wonderful HD signal down fiber optic cable to Atlanta where it is than uplinked to satellite and cable providers.
