View Full Version : What do I need to know about selling my TiVo?

I have Samsung TiVo receiver that I'm no longer using and am looking to sell. I have a buyer all lined up, but before I give it to him, do I have to worry about giving him the access card? Obviously he'd like to have it so he doesn't have to buy a new one.
The receiver has be inactive since about Janurary. What I don't want is for my buyer to activate the receiver and have it start billing me. I don't know what the standard procedure is when activating a previously used receiver. Should I be safe giving up the access card to the buyer?
Thanks!

Make sure the receiver and card are not longer on your account. This is probably the case based on what you already stated. Odds are that the buyer will need to purchase their own card anyway. Alot of CSR's say they can't activate a receiver with a "used" card but some will do it so it's obviously not a can't thing (more like won't).

If the account is in good standing and the receiver has been deactivated then there's no reason not to give the buyer the whole shebang. He'll have to get a new card regardless. Most CSRs won't reactivate a used card and the ones that will generally reactivate cards only if they're on the same account, as when replacing a receiver or DVR with a newer one.

Out of curiosity, if you have some good content on the Tivo you're selling, say some HD movies, should the buyer be able to view these when they activate the Tivo on their account?

If you don't delete them then yes they will be viewable.

I'm not sure of that actually, I think maybe he might have to have the same channel package you have. I asked this question at tivocommunity.com years ago and I think that was the answer.

Absolutely NOT true at all, for example:
-many people record movies from FREE premium previews & watch them long after the preview ends, w/out subbing to that channel. Or, same difference with prog from channels that NO longer exists. ;)
-I bought a used Tivo that had some shows on it from premiums I did not have - again, they played just fine
I have MANY shows from channels I no longer have & they play just fine - once you successfully record it, it yours forever... ;)

If it is a Samsung TiVo, how could it have HD movies on it? The only HD TiVo is made by DirecTV - the HR10-250. There is no other HD TiVo.

I'd imagine that ptrubey was asking for his own HR10's sake, not to imply that there could be HD movies on the Samsung Tivo.
