View Full Version : VOD vs. PVR
I keep on reading how Comcast and probably other companies has spent millions (using subscriber moneys really) to upgrade services adding VOD in markets. I see digital cable and high speed internet having a solid base, but does VOD? Anyone try it? If one had a S/A PVR with decent 40 hours best quality is that better than VOD? Is VOD anywhere successful?

I think for most VOD is apples and oranges for a PVR. Unless Comcast has "Friends" or "Buffy" or "Sopranos" queued up for Video on Demand, I would not use it. But if you PVR alot of new release movies off the Premium channels. Then VOD might be more to your liking. I don't watch alot of movies, and I'll usually rent DVD in order to get the bonuses, wich I doubt VOD will offer. And then the question is, how long can I watch VOD. I've seen VOD on some web sites, and you get like 3 days and then the download is useless. PVR is as long as you like it.

I don't think much of VOD. If I wanna watch something I'll PVR it. The only benefit would be, lets say you only want HBO for The Sopranos or Sex and the City, you could pay for what you want, instead of the whole package for $12.

I agree - a PVR sounds much better to me than a VOD service. From the service provider's standpoint however - PVR hasn't hit mass market appeal. Therefore, the VOD feature may be better for the typical consumer. The appeal of VOD may further the PVR market though after the typical consumer gets a taste of it (through VOD).
