View Full Version : 103(b) - no odd # TPs?

I have 2 HR20-700's. I just replaced my BBC's with rev 3's (thanks DirecTV). However, I have the same "issue" before & after replacing my old BBC's (they were rev 2). I have 90+ signals on all even numbered TP's on 103(b) but zeros on every odd numbered TP. Same situation on both HR20's.
Is this anything I should be concerned with? I seem to be reading that others are seing signals on all TP's.

Yes, there is a problem. I'm guessing you have a multiswitch (and if you are getting good strong signals on either set of transponders, that means you have the correct switch!)
So it would appear that the coax that goes from the ~13V/22khz port on the switch to the dish is bad. Some users have reported that line was never even hooked up! Others have seen bad connectors (that happens, of course) or other issues. The good news is that it is easily identified at the switch side.
If you are competent DIY with coax and cables, you likely can fix this. If not, get a call into DIRECTV ASAP.
Cheers,
Tom

Hi Tom, as you know I posted this same problem earlier, I am going to look at the connections at the dish (99 & 103 LNB) in the morning. I am getting strong odds and evens on the 99 but weak evens only on the 103b and fairly strong evens on the 103a. It just doesn't make since to me. It sounds like a messed up Lnb to me. I did order a couple more bbc's but do you have any more thoughts? BTW I do not have/use a multi switch or diplexer, just dish to H20-100
I realize that there are several threads on this topic but I can't seem to find the answer to whether this is a problem or not.
My setup is a slim-line 5 lnb straight to an HR20-100. Everything seems fine but I also have nothing on the 103A odds. I receive all channels except for the 498 confirmation (even after a reset).
What channels will I not receive in this case?

It's not unusual to have nothing or weaksignals on 103(a) transponders. They are spot beams for HD locals. The fact you can not receive the ch 498 test signal "Congratulations!" page indicates that you either have bad/no BBC's, poor 103(b) signals, or both (unlikely).

I had a similar issue. Mine was the opposite - where I only got the odds on one tuner. I switched the inputs into the BBCs (from the wall) and the problem stayed on the same tuner. I switched which BBC went into the tuners and the problem followed. Obviously a problem with the BBC. I called up, got a new one (they actually sent 2), installed it last night, and now have atleast mid-90s on all of 103b transponders I should be getting (non N/A).
So - run the same checks and see if it is a bad BBC. :D

I don't know what spot beam is. I get my locals from OTA so maybe I don't care. I have some spare BBCs - I could swap those, however, channels 480/481 both cofirm my BBCs as good.
Thanks

Then you must need a dish realignment, if you have no 103 (b) signals and your BBC's are good. It's also possible that you have a bad LNB on your dish, but less likely. (The spot beams are from the Spaceway 1 and 2 (103(a) and 99(b)) satellites and carry local OTA HD signals via satellite, if you get local channels. The individual transponders broadcast "spot beams" of a variety of shapes and sizes.to geographical subsets of the US.

Just to close this one out, you were right, Tom. The ~13V/22khz line was not properly installed. D* service came out today and ran a new line from the dish to the switch. All TP's are up now and I've got all test channels working great on both HR-20's.
Thanks again!

Sorry, missed this one.
If no multiswitch, I'm guessing either a bad coax, bad h20/BBC, or bad dish. If you have a spare BBC, try that, otherwise call DIRECTV and talk them thru it until they send someone.
Good luck,
Tom
