Greetings all,

First let me say that this is my first post since I will be getting DTV on Saturday. So my question is this ... How do you know which HR20 model you have either the 100 or the 700 model? When I placed my order from the Directv webpage it didn't mention if it was a HR20-100 or 700 model and the order status page doesn't tell you either. I also notice that there are two different types of Dishes as well the slim line 5lnb and the older model 5lnb so again how do i know which one I am getting from the installer. I only ask this question because we all know installers will sometime rip you off if you don't know. I find Directv website very vague in describing a "Standard"installation versus a Complex one.

The HR20-100 is Black, the other is silver. The new dish is very wide and slim and they mount supporting brackets. Basically you get the receiver they have on the truck and either is fine, because as far as i'm concerned.... a esata drvie is necessary for additional recording time

my HR20-100 is silver...

One way to tell the difference is that the HR20-100 has two ethernet ports on the rear of the machine, while I believe the HR20-700 only has one. Also, the HR20-100 has an external antenna on the rear panel for the RF remote, while the HR20-700 does not (it's internal).

I actually have both. They are functionally the same, however the HR20-100 seems a little faster -- slightly more responsive.

HR20-100 is silver too. Besides hardware differences or external rf antenna on the 100, they have the model number written on them so you will know whether you got 700 or 100. But both you get will be silver.

Except in RF mode they have a problem and it's slightly or greatly less responsive.

Yes, I have heard the RF responsiveness of the HR20-100 is not very good.

The easiest way is to open the little "door" where the access card gets plugged in (lower right front of the unit) - there's a sticker there which tells you.

Or, look at the back of the unit, there's a sticker there as well, which also will tell you.

Or, once you've got it set up, use <Menu><Help & Settings><Settings><Info & Test>. It will be listed there along with the serial #, Access Card # and lots of other information.

There was a very limited early production run of black HR20-100s back in the spring. Even then is was pretty rare to get one....and everything since then has been silver.

I have a -100 using RF with no issues at all, although there have been significant reports of RF problems with them.

To clear this up...

There were very few HR20-100s in black. They're not made anymore. All new HR20s are silver. The -100 and -700 have some minor cosmetic differences. It's true that the -700 has better RF performance in many cases, while the -100 runs cooler and has coax audio.

The -100 has a slightly bigger drive, but it doesn't work out to a measurable difference in recording capacity. The -700 is usually a few software builds ahead of the -100, if you are a member of our Cutting Edge forum and download pre-release builds.

The one thing that is not different between the two, is that they are both excellent DVRs with the same capabilities.

Ok thanks for clearing that up. Now what about the standard install part ? I notice when I bought my house that they had DTV hear before because there is a Dish on the Roof but when I moved in I disconnected it at the cable box and plugged in Comcast. Now Comcast has pissed me off for the last time always saying the problems with the series 3 Tivo was with Tivo and come to find out it was Comcast provisioning Department not setting is up correctly. It took me a half of morning on the phone and with a arrogent Tech trying to tell me it's my fault. Anyway back to the question, Since they can obiviously use the one jack from the wall I need another wire ran to two rooms for the HR20 and the Dtv dvr for the other room. Would this be considered a Complex install? If so I wonder how much this woud cost because it I have to pay I might as well tell the Tech. from Dtv not to hook it up and go back to Comcast untill they come out with a Single Multi line switch for exactly this situation.

Actually the easiest way to tell the difference is that the 700 has cooling slots on top and the 100 does not.

Wow so I was just amazingly lucky to get a BLACK HR20-100? I *really* like the way it looks - would hate to go back to silver!

I was glad I got the 100 just because of this. I'm tired of devices with the slots on the top since you can't put stuff on top of it.

<sigh> Yes, the black does look nice... I was hoping to get one, but based on this thread, I guess there are no plans to make any more... :(

There is no control over which model you will get from DirecTV. There is a way to get a specific model. Go to stores like BestBuy/Circuit City and look up on the box. After you find and buy specific model just call DirecTV and schedule installation.

If you are planning to use RF definitely buy 700. I dont know what exactly the problem is but somehow internal antenna of 700 works better than external antenna of 100.
