View Full Version : Will new HD channels upconvert? ie. Cartoon Network
What happens when there is an SD show on one of the new HD channels? Will it be upconverted? If it will be left the same then wouldn't it be no different than the SD channel listed next to it in the guide? If it is indeed upconverted, for example Cartoon Network, will it look better than it's SD counterpart? Basically what I am asking is will there be hope that an SD show won't look like crap on my 104" screen. :)

i refuse to take part in this thread due to jealousy issues
Wouldn't Boomerang look better in HD? Don't they show the clasic Cartoon that were meant for the big screen?

I was watching it yesterday and it was not stretched, it was 1080i, but 4:3
Cartoon Network as an example. What about upconverting in general? What are the HD channels going to do with SD content?

Up until the early 50's, most, if not all, movies and cartoons were done in 4x3 aspect ratio.

We just don't know.... and probably DirecTV doesn't even know...
As they are just the carriers.
There most likely will be no universal statement for all the new channels.
Some might upconvert... others might just mat the image to 16x9...
Others might do something else.
But that is the content providers responsibility, DirecTV just is responsible from getting it from point-a to point-b to point-c

I just hope that no one else goes for the ESPN model. Please, if you aren't going to stretch it, LEAVE THE PILLAR BARS BLANK!!! All I need is for a couple of years from now my screen always looks like this from burn in:
E
S
P
N
This is uncalled for and I avoid ESPN HD when they have SD content. I just watch the SD channel.

And please no Stretch-O-Vision ala TNT either.

How about new animations for cartoon network? Will the animators now need to draw in those extra pieces? So animators should ask for a raise!!:hurah: :goofygrin

Yeah they were.
I've recently gotten my 4 year old into watching the old Tom and Jerry cartoons that i grew up with on Boomerang and alot of them are letterboxed. Those should convert quite nicely to HD.
(BTW Rob nice avatar that was good game last Saturday...showed us what we need to improve on...USC is tough on all sides of the ball, I give us another year or two before we're finally back...we're getting there though :) )

I couldn't agree more. But I don't see BoomerangHD on any lists. Did I miss something or is this just wishful thinking?

I think the bars slightly change, by very slowly moving the "ESPN" or changing colors eveo so slightly. I don't know about the new bars but I know they definitely did that with the old bars.

I think it looks very cool to do that, but then again, I have a DLP set not subject to burn in and do understand your concerns.
